Third Recommendation?

Hello! I’m a senior applying for a BA in Theatre/Drama at a few Common App schools this year. For context, I will be receiving a recommendation from my junior year English teacher and my Drama teacher. I believe that they will write strong letters since they know me really well and they have witnessed my growth as a student and as a performer.

I noticed that some of the schools I’m applying to will let me submit a third recommendation (since my Drama teacher’s recommendation will be used for the application into the theatre program). I was thinking of having my Spanish teacher write a recommendation since I did really well in her class and her letter would demonstrate more of my strengths as a student. How much does having this third recommendation impact my chances of getting into a school, namely Chapman? Thanks!

D, Class of ‘23, submitted 3 letters of rec at schools that permitted it, and one was from a math teacher. Good luck!

A third letter is generally intended to be from someone outside the school, such as an employer or supervisor or outside coach. Someone who can offer a different perspective. Unless they specifically ask for the third letter from another teacher, such a letter is considered redundant and unlikely to help your case. It won’t be the reason you’re rejected but nor will be the factor that tips the needle in your favor.

You may be right. Thinking back, D had four letters. Two from school (both were academic) and two from theatre work outside of school. She must have had a school that allowed four.
