Third recommendation?

Are we allowed to have a third recommendation? Also would a recommendation from a Penn alumni really help?

You know that is an excellent question... I would think having a letter from a Penn alumni would NOT help anymore than a letter from someone else... here is what I think... a supp letter is for someone who knows u personally well outside of academics to describe you, so admissions get a better picture of you... although it may seems that an alumni's letter is valued more, I think it's really how well the person knows you and how much they can help admissions get to know you...

bump......

what about a current outstanding student at wharton? One who knows me outside academics, and that has some form of contact with adcoms?

If they have some really good connections another letter that says the same stuff "Bob is a good leader, he does community service, blah, blah, blah...." isn't going to help you. I had 3 letters of rec and the third one, which didn't have to be a teacher, was written by an advisor I had who was a really good writer and she told the adcom something my teachers couldn't about me. I guess it helped because I got into Wharton but don't think you have to add another one if they are just going to say the same stuff.

kevin, can you list your stats please.

Pretty please =)

Well since you asked so nice...

Asian male from Idaho.
GPA: 4.1 W, 3.9 UW
SAT: 1890 (640,630,620), highest SAT 2 score was like 550 (yuck)
ACT: 28
EC's: National officer for Business Professionals of America (like FBLA), Mayor's youth advisory council, state champion in tennis

Most people would probably tell me I had no shot to get into Wharton with my scores but my EC's and essays are probably what got me in (RD applicant). The best advice I can give is to spend a substantial amount of time on your essays because Penn weights those a lot. I didn't have an interview so don't worry about it if you do.

kevin_tennis72: my third rec is NOT going to be like that. It is from a teacher who can write differently aboiut me since her class was different from the other two teacher's classes.

kevin: what college do you currently attend in Penn?

It says wharton in his post...

yeah I'm a freshman in Wharton

how the hell did you get in with those scores? no offense...im asian too and my parents make me retake sat ii's when i have 740s. i also have to retake the sat even though i got a 2270. -_-

He was an officer for a national org., plus tennis state champion..... a 3.9uw doesnt hurt either.

cookiemunster: every person is unique and just because your parents are like that doesn't mean all parents are like that. Not even the fact that you are both asian means that both sets of parents are really strict.

so just because he has an 1890 means he gets rejected? you are too one-sided cookiemunster

Thank you Def890. My parents didn't really care what kind of scores I got. I tried my hardest and those were the scores I ended up with. More and more now schools are relying less and less on scores. Once you get past a certain standardized test score the rest is how you represent yourself. My regional admissions director actually wrote me a personal note after I got accepted and said the admissions committee had a really easy time letting me in because of my leadership and passion for business. If you have mediocre scores it's not the end of the world (and a 740 is not a bad score, jesus kids would kill for those types of scores) worry about the other parts of your app and Penn will notice.

I agree that people stress scores too much, but nonetheless they are still important. I think you are the exception rather than the rule.

don't be a tool

two words: geographic diversity

Idaho is the next best thing to Wyoming and North Dakota

Not to discount his exceptional EC's, but getting that representation from every state is of incredible importance to the school, and there are only two kids from Idaho in my year

mengcheng9287, thx for rhyming my post and let make a poem out of this. Unless you all have a little fear.
