Third Year of Foreign Language Worth It or Not

I am a sophomore in French 1 as of right now, and already plan on taking French 2 next year as a junior, but I am debating on whether to take French 3 Honors my senior year (which is good enough for almost every college), or just take 2 years of French so that my senior year I won’t have to worry about a foreign language class. Any feedback would be nice!

It depends upon the requirements for the colleges you plan to apply. Some colleges have 3-4 years for their Foreign Language requirements.

How about taking a foreign language for its own sake? Which is pretty cool. Does everything need to be because what “college” will think? If so, you are headed toward a shallow life.

You don’t have to decide now. When you are a junior you will have a better sense how you are doing in French, what types of colleges you may be looking at etc. and you can make a decision then. For many colleges it is a good idea to have a third year of foreign language.

If you are considering competitive schools, absolutely. Ideally, they’re looking for four years of the same language, so if you can’t do that, do three.
