This actually happened - College Board Error

We used Score Choice to send a particular SAT score to a school. We received the order confirmation from College Board showing that it was sent to the school. When the school emailed us that they received the SAT score they referenced the date of the exam. This was most fortunate as most schools simply state that the score was received - not which score was received. The exam they received was NOT the exam we requested. We called the school and they confirmed they were sent the wrong exam. We called College Board and they admitted they made a mistake and sent the wrong exam - even though their order confirmation email states the actual exam we requested. It’s shocking that this could actually happen. We were lucky to catch it and we did call the other schools our son applied to and made sure they received the correct exam, which they did. Can only imagine how often this may happen without the knowledge of the applicant. Very troubling.

Not the first time. While I’m not implying that this is what you are doing, your story is part of the reason I discourage students from seeking a way to circumvent a college’s rules on score submissions - accidents happen.

But what if there is no circumvention efforts on the part of the applicant? What if, in compliance with the college’s rules which allow for score choice, a student exercises this option and this type of error happens. Good grief…now I’m thinking we should just send all scores, score choice or not.

@skieurope - there was no circumvention of rules. None of the schools he applied to required all scores to be sent.
@ThinkOn - I do agree that all scores should be sent to avoid this potential disaster. In his case they sent a test he took that was 200 points lower than the one we wanted sent. This would have definitely been a deal breaker had it not been caught. I wonder how many other students may have missed out on an acceptance due to college board’s errors.

This error suggests that there is a great deal of human processing which is completely unnecessary.

If College Board was efficiently run, the orders would automatically generate a printout that would simply be put into an envelope for mailing.

@hebegebe

I think the score reports are sent electronically. No snail mail.

And I agree with that.

Nor did I state that there was. In fact, I said that it probably did not apply in your case.

As I said, accidents happen - and the College Board is hardly unique in making errors. I’ve received the wrong product from a couple of companies that are in the top 5 market capitalization. However, if CB rectifies the error (and I understand that they cannot unring the bell), and I will assume that they would, I’m not sure what you want to hear from the CB or from us.

@skieurope - problem with this form of communication is that you sound pretentious as hell - though I’m sure you don’t mean it that way. Why would you think I want anything from you? I was sending out a warning that this happens and applicants should be wary of the system as there are flaws that could significantly impact a students opportunities.

Op has raised point. An error was made. The error was resolved.
