This board seems to be dead. Guess I'll try to get something started.

I hear it's got a nice campus. The few people I've met that know much about Whitman say most students love everything about the school but it's tough to get into. The cost of a LAC seems a bit high compared to other schools.

Has anybody visited or attended Whitman? Impressions? Anything wierd or different about it?

This is an amazing liberal arts college and somewhat undiscovered but that seems to be changing. The chapter in Colleges That Change Lives (or CTCL website) is a good overview and the website (whitman.edu), especially some of the pieces written by the current President and on his homepage--give you an idea why students love this place. Alums I know rave about their experience. It is definitely worth checking out--and probably no more expensive than comparable schools

Hi, this is sooo quiet. I'm applying regular decision. I have to admit, it isn't my first choice, but is easier to get into and gives money. I would still love going there.

Maybe the quiet is related to the welcoming but relaxed academic culture? To be included in the Colleges That Change Lives category schools have to have a demonstrated track record that: (quoting the CTCL website)
* learning is collaborative, not competitive
* there is a discussion of values in the classrooms and elsewhere on campus
* there is a sense of community and connection that goes well beyond 4 years of attendance
* students are there to learn, not to just get a degree
* students want to tell the story about how the college has changed them
* the focus campuswide is on the transformation between orientation and graduation, rather than on the accomplishment of admitted students

Whitman's admitted students "stats" match or exceed ranges at higher "ranked" LACs but it's location probably impacts desireability (and therefore app/accept rates) for those not familiar with or wanting the wonders of Walla Walla

When my son visited his impression was not "mature and solemn," but rigorous yet very Northwest laid back and friendly. After checking into the hotel the evening before his visit he went for a run on campus- immediately students were saying hi. During the visit (on a school night) students did some studying, yet they also did lots of socializing in the dorm rooms and the campus center.

My son had a great time on a campus overnight visit and it became his first choice because he felt the students were bright, committed, and a lot of fun. There is a very collaborative approach in classes and with professors, students work hard, but also value relaxation, creativity, and active participation in the community and outdoors.

I've visited, and have a lot of friends who attend and love it. Couldn't tell you about the "NW laid back" style, seemed more uptight to me than other LACs I've visited. My small Eastern Washington town considers Whitman the top local school, dunno about any wider reputation. The location kinda stinks, their local high school is in our sports league and everyone dreads the four hour bus trip to the middle of nowhere.
