so how much of a chance do you think I have to get directly to the engineering program?

I think you will be fine should you really achieve those CR & M scores. Even though UMD does not count the W section yet, it may change. I would work on getting the W score higher. Not only for college admission but becuase it is important to be able to write well in college. I know many Maryland public schools are not doing a very good job with preparing student for this area of the SAT. It tends to be the lowest score for students overall. Try to talk to an english teacher or make sure you take a writing intensive course next year. You don’t want to learn how to write in college while trying to do everything else.

“It’s some butt” is now my favorite expression. If you pull the native american card, you are in no doubt because I think that is the most underrepresented minority of all. For direct Eng, try and get at least 1400 M+CR and you should be in as NA/PI.

thanks, the thing is I’m trying to take writing intensive course with AP english classes. It’s just that even though I write essays well, it is the grammar that really is my problem area.

raise you CR and good luck!!
