i am an incoming freshman, pre-med. I am definitely majoring Biochemistry. it's not because i think that it'll help me get into med school or anything. I love chem and sciences in general. besides, I saw online that med schools are starting to favor non-science majors. anyway, I've also come to love psychology. I was thinking about taking a second major in psychology BA. I was wondering if it was doable? if I could do that for four years? or if it was worth it even if i liked psychology.

Its do-able… I know some people who have double-majored in things as ridiculous as physics and math who survived. A psychology BA is not that difficult in the first place. Try it out… see how you like it.

what if I take philosophy instead of psychology

Still do-able… I actually know someone who did that, granted, he is VERY smart. Also, I hear you have to REALLY love philosophy to major in it (no matter what school)… other than that, it is not a hard major.

No offense, but no one is definitely majoring in anything freshman year… Trust me on that. Also, there isn’t a Biochemistry major - you would just be on the Biochemistry track. It is super intense. Getting a BA in Psych isn’t too bad, but anything paired with hardcore Chem stuff isn’t going to be a walk in the park. To major in Philosophy you have to be on a certain “wavelength,” so to speak; I know several people who majored in it, and they were on another level for sure. You either have that philosophy “thing” or you don’t! I definitely don’t, ha ha.

I agree with jambaby. A bunch of people come in saying they are pre-med with a bio major and after a month they are art/history/business/classics/whatever with no intent of doing pre-med. Also, even if you still want to go to med school, which is a great goal, don’t confine yourself to the traditional science majors. I believe I saw somewhere that biology has one of the lowest med school ranks, and chemistry isn’t much better. You can be a doctor with anything so long as you fulfill the pre-reqs.

One of the great things about UNC, there are so many options. You can do virtually whatever you want. The gen ed requirements make it so that you get exposed to different discliplines, you might fall in love with one of those. Take a freshman seminar that has nothing to do with you intended major and fulfill that you find interesting a fulfills a bunch of requirements. A freshman seminar in your major probably won’t do you much good, because it will fulfill the same gen eds as other courses in the major.

My advice to all incoming freshman when it comes to classes/majors: do whatever the hell you want.

Why would you major in philosophy?

When I took my son to visit Wake Forest we went to several meeting with professors respresenting different departments. The philosophy professor told us that a lot of businesses hired people with philosophy degrees since they were free thinkers.

That sounds like advertising baloney, but I wouldn’t know, being a college student and all.

I have also heard of a law school-philosophy connection… Who knows! The business connection is interesting.
