this has nothing to do w/ Yale (or maybe it does...)

gay marriage is being banned not b/c leviticus says that homosexuality is a sin and not because everyone who believes in the ban is a bigot (though I am sure some are). Those who favor a gay marriage ban do so because they feel that traditional marriage between a man and a woman is an important societal institution, and feel that if anybody were allowed to marry (what's stopping 10 men from marrying 5 women and a dog--afterall who are we to impose if they all love one another?) the institution as a whole would be undermined. Marriage is far more than a podium to tell the world that you love someone, it was put in place to support those wishing to build families, and it plays an important role in the welfare of society (a child raised by a never-married mother is seven times more likely to live in poverty than a child raised by his biological parents in an intact marriage)

i personally believe that everything should be done to protect traditional marriage, though i am not completely convinced yet that gay marriage undermines it. i just wanted to put the real issues at stake--i find it very disingenuous to claim that everyone against gay marriage is a discriminatory bigot and hate monger
