This is a generic "what are my chances?" post.

First off, I realize my username is spelled wrong, but the actual spelling (Toccata) seems to be taken.

I don't really know what else to say. My favorite schools right now would have to be Brown, Wesleyan (CT), and Oberlin. I'm looking to major in some sort of music (ed, theory, history, etc., but not performance.)

I'm ranked 4th out of 200 (so top 2%), which is the lowest I've ever been (highest was 1st) and I'm hoping to move up another place or so based on my classes for my senior year. I took some classes that weren't weighted as much as the ones others took this year, so that killed me temporarily. All of my academics are the highest level offered, but I also take some music classes that bring me down.

SAT scores
Verbal 690
Math 670
Writing 800

I'm taking the US History, Literature, and Mathmatics 1 SAT IIs in June and the SAT I again next fall to raise my verbal and math, I hope.

I'm not entirely sure what my GPA is, but I'm not too worried about that as I wouldn't have maintained my rank if my GPA wasn't fine.

National Merit Something (haven't found out if it's just a commendation or semifinalist or whatever yet)
Connecticut Governor's Scholar
National Honor Society
French National Honor Society
Cornell Book Award

4 years of varsity tennis and I'll be captain next year
1st chair flute and section leader in concert band for 2 years (I also play picc and oboe)
Pianist in auditioned jazz band for 3 years
Co-editor of school newspaper
School chorus
School Book Club
Italian exchange program (as a host and guest)

Out of school, I've danced for 13 years (including a few years of student teaching), studied piano for almost 10, flute for 7, assisted at a summer music program for middle schoolers for several years, assisted at a townwide select band for middle schoolers, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, served on my church council, worked in animal care and teaching a few classes at a nature center, and I've done assorted small musical performances in church and community settings.

I'm a little worried because I've never really had any sort of non-volunteer work experience and I don't want to come across as that spoiled, lazy white middle-class kid. I think I might be a little generic in general.

I also had a few issues with the school newspaper one year which might affect my chances...my co-editor and I were temporarily removed from the staff for part of a year mainly because we included the words "chalice" and "tabernacle" which are apparently very offensive in Canada. I think some of the more liberal schools would see the humor in that if I were to somehow explain it, but I don't know how that suspicious gap will look to other schools.

My apologies for writing so much...do I have a chance at Brown, Oberlin, or Wesleyan? Any other recommendations? Should I start looking at hairdressing schools or looking for a rich husband?

Brown is certainly one of the schools that WOULD find humor in that newspaper incident. And, anything is possible, but I would try to get your SATs up a bit.

If you are applying specifically for the music dept (at Oberlin, for example) they will go by your audition, not by school newspaper or sports...

hahaha rich husband. nice one.

seems like with your record you could almost get in anywhere. all you can do is try.

"If you are applying specifically for the music dept (at Oberlin, for example) they will go by your audition, not by school newspaper or sports..."

Yes, I know, but I do have to get into the non-music part of the school as well. If I went to Oberlin, I'd most likely try the 5-year double degree program which is both from the conservatory and the college and an excellent audition probably wouldn't get me in unless I had the test scores and such.

Not to nag, but any other opinions?

I'd be surprised if you didn't get into Oberlin. Wesleyan and Brown will be harder to get into just overrall. I got in and didn't have any work experience (I also didn't really mention my volunteer hours either). Your grades, scores, honors, etc are fine. And if all those years including up to the current date, that's even better. Don't worry about the ranking so much.

The college music offerings are fantastic. And the great thing is you can be involved with music stuff outside of classes without having to be in the Con. And if you don't get into the double degree program the first year, if you decide to accept admission into the college you can audition for the con again the next year.

If you're from Canada, international admissions can be a little trickier. But I wouldn't really be worried too much. No beauty schools or rich husbands needed.

For brown you have a great chance. It will be more of a match for you if your sat's are in the 700+ range. Also get higher than a 700 on the sat 2 and you will do fine. Your work exp. wont be detremental.

good choices so far, i'd add some more schools to your list, similar to the ones you have, such as vassar and conn college

I'd say that you are definitely in at Oberlin.. GPA is great!!

Wesleyan would be a Match.. Brown, however, would be a reach.

Good luck!
