Wow, it is a good essay. I really like it :)

Excellent SAT scores and a stellar GPA cannot compensate for a missing sense of humor.

damn right eckie, and some of the posters who are wondering whether this guy was telling the truh clearly need to grasp that

For clarification, the essay was written by a former applicant to NYU who majored in journalism - the essay really is genius if you READ BETWEEN THE LINES - not only does the work convey a unique sense of humor, but it also satirizes the modern college admissions process. The author is trying to say: I'm only 18, what kind of life-altering experiences do you expect me to have at such a young age, an age when I'm still trying to find my place in the world...

Just to clear up some confusion...the essay was written by a guy named Hugh Gallagher in 1990 NOT FOR HIS NYU APPLICATION, but for the Scholastic Writing Competition, a prestigious national high school writing contest. The prompt was to use an actual college-essay prompt, and so Gallagher used NYU's. He did not submit the essay to NYU, but nevertheless got accepted.

Walt Whitman Did Not Go To College

wow did you really do ALL of that!?!?

hahaha....couldn't resist. you guys are funny :)

I don't think it's possible to do all of that. I mean for one person to do ALL of that.

I think this guy was lying about some stuff up there.

"Yeah, I mean come on, there's no way he could've done ALL that, and laundry lists never work...."

LOL some of these people have never heard the word satire apparently.

Funny stuff. And amazing essay.

Oh, bravo. Way to read the posts ahead of you.

Guys come on...the author is of course Chuck Norris, let's not be insulting by being so ignorant

"I think this guy was lying about some stuff up there."

haha i hope to GOD that the people who said this, and things along these lines, were joking. i mean, some of the items were "i defy the laws of physics" etc.

and the people who are mentioning plagiarism-the poster didn't claim to be the original writer-i think that they just found it funny and so decided to post it. though i suppose he could have edited his original post after receiving the flak...but still, i believe he just wanted to share this hilarious essay.

This thread only serves to continue to reinforce my belief that many posters on CC need to get out, at least once a week.

That essay is pure brilliance, and is so original that it could never be duplicated.

jpps - most turn to dust if they try to leave the house if not for school or college admission or resumee reasons. Its an unfortunate truth :(

Thank you!

SAnctify this kid!

this essay makes me smile every time i read it

Yeah, my councelor handed out this. It is Hugh Gallegher's "College Essay", and it's fantastic. I love this essay.

And I laugh at those who took it seriously...

If Im not mistaken,

a VERY similar essay is featured in a college admissions book.

the humor is kinda lame and the essay itself seems to recall seemingly arbitrary details and events that are clearly false. the events are obvious b.s., but if that was the point, the events certainly could have been more absurd and humorous.

the essay also comes off a bit arrogant or pretensious. this guy seems like he has a real ego on him, despite the fact the events are meant to be ridiculous

The only reason this essay got Whitman into NYU is because it is dated, and perhaps was thought humorous in the faraway past but is clearly not humorous nor witty anymore. That's my two cents.
