This is a stupid question

I was wondering, since colleges don't have a "hall pass rule" like high school, do the professor care if you leave in the middle of their lecture to go to the bathroom, make a phone call, go back to your dorm to pick up something you forgot etc.? Or do the professor prefer that you ask him/her permission to leave the class? Or do they give you breaks to do this stuff when you are in a 2 hr class?

You can leave whenever you want. Heck, some people even read newspapers or sleep during class.

However, if you're being a disruption to the class (i.e. making a phone call while he's lecturing) you may be asked to leave or to immediately end your phone call. People pay big bucks for university, and everyone should have an opportunity to learn (if they so choose).

As a matter of etiquette, I'd assume most professors don't like people leaving and coming in during lectures. That's not to say you can't, but I wouldn't make it a habit.

I have had over 40 classes at the collegiate level and never have seen a professor once say anything about people getting up and leaving class if they had to take a dump. But if the class is a two hour or greater class, there usually is a break in the middle to use the toilet, or go smoke.

I took some courses at my local university awhile back that were two hours long. They were discussion oriented, and no one just got up and left without giving a good reason to the teacher first, but there was a break halfway through.

I've never seen anyone give a reason to the professor to leave the classroom. You just get up and go. Of course my classes were mostly 10-25 people and we all knew each other, so it was no big deal... i was on first name basis with most of my professors because we were really relaxed in class.

Just don't sit near the front if you expect that you'll need a bathroom break.

I had one professor who was Old style. I mean he would yell at you if you got up.

It is common respect to a teacher not to get up in class.

so in his class nobody did it, but in others we did.

You can really do what you want, but some profs lock the door as soon as class starts...

most classes are only 50 or 80 minutes. Is it that hard to go to the bathroom before?

Leaving class to make a phone call is not acceptable.

If you have to leave early, let the professor know before the class, and sit near the door so you don't bother people. Especially in a lecture class, if you're going to leave, don't sit in the middle or a row.

The last thing you want if you go to office hours is the professor to recognize you as the student who is always leaving class.

Funny story:

I knew you were "allowed" to leave class whenever you wanted -- you were paying to be there, and you were the one who chose what you were paying for. I also knew that it was extremely rude to get up in the middle of lecture and walk out the doors.

One day I had a very valid excuse for leaving early (earlier shift at work than usual) and in an effort to avoid disrespecting the professor whom I very much enjoyed class with, I took the precaution of informing her that I'd be ducking out about half an hour earlier that day.

She gave me an amused little smile and said, "Okay," in the kind of voice that sounded like she was insinuating "You poor little freshman, you'll learn quick enough!"

I never asked again. (Then again, I'm one of those silly students who feels that $70 per class period is not worth wasting...)
