This is a thread for people to post/suggest REALLY GOOD Third Tier Schools:

Please be respectful. No trash talking. Every school has a mission to serve its constituents. There are some wonderful schools out there that are off the radar screen of many people.

I have one:

Bridgewater College in Virginia. Fabulous academics. Amazing 50 acre Equestrian Center. Gorgeous campus in the Shenandoahs. Small college where everyone knows your name and everyone cares about you and the Administration and Professors are warm and endearing. They run a very efficient admissions process and they say what they will do for you and then they do it. Fact.

Anyone else?

There are far too many to list here. With that said, I’d like to give Kansas State University a shout-out. They are a top ten producer of elite scholarship winners - #1 among publics and below only HYPS and Duke - as well as #1 in number of national Professor of the Year winners. Manhattan is great if you like a small, college-town feel.

Kansas State is NOT a third-tier college.

Fail.

“Tier 3”

how much better do you think LSU, a tier 2 college, is compared to KSU?

in my opinion, KSU is not a tier 3 college, US News obviously thinks different.

^ I don’t want to derail a potentially useful thread too much, but you obviously don’t understand the whole point of this thread. We’re talking about schools that are “off the radar” of people on CC, presumably because they are ranked as 3rd-tier schools. I don’t consider K-State 3rd-tier either, which is the entire point of posting it here. What on earth would be the point of a thread containing only schools that we personally consider poor compared to their competition?

Is Kansas State off the radar? I don’t think so. If your school is listed in Fiske’s, Princeton Review etc…, it probably isn’t completely off the radar.

Bridgewater College is off the radar

^ Twelve threads have been posted on the K-State subforum here on CC since the forum first opened. Twelve. For comparison, Carnegie Mellon has had 687+ threads just in the past year.

Do you have anything to contribute here?

Utah State University

[Utah State University - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/logan-ut/utah-state-3677)
“Tier 3”

USU is a major research university in a wide variety of disciplines. It has been recognized by USNews as #1 in students with the least amount of debt on graduation, yet the institution admits the 7th highest percentage of Pell Grant students among schools surveyed by Washington Monthly. Programs in physics, education, accounting, and civil engineering have all earned accolades. The location in Logan is simply stunning (see link #2).

They have excellent guaranteed scholarship opportunities.

UT Dallas is a pretty decent college. The only catch is that it is pretty selective for a Tier 3 school.

[University of Texas–Dallas - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/richardson-tx/university-of-texas-dallas-9741/@@Admissions_overview.html)

Good…keep them coming. And I suspect that a lot of the choices will be smaller colleges, many of the private.

Whitworth is pretty strong if you’re into the whole Christian college thing. (Is it considered second-tier or third-tier?)

On a side note about K-State, what can you tell me about the school and/or the town? One of my uncles actually suggested the school to me to think about applying to since he lives nearby…

@CrownOftheSea: I’ll send you a PM.

Kansas State got a 95 out of 99 on the Princeton Review Quality Of Life rating.

UA-Huntsville for Engineering, Comp Sci, Science majors, business majors, and nursing majors.

Great scholarships, too. And, great co-op and internship opportunities for high tech majors.

From just looking at the US News rankings

DePaul University
Drake University
Howard University
Penn State

For LACs

Berea College (free tuition)
Centenary College of Louisiana
College of the Atlantic
Eckerd College
Guilford College
McDaniel College
Morehouse College
Oglethorpe University
St. Norbert College
Whitter College

I would add Centre College in Kentucky there too, countryday. Saint Louis University is a second tier, borderline third tier National University by the rankings. Its not off the radar so to speak, but its not center page either. Its also a fine school.
Webster University in Missouri is also very good.

University of the Ozarks in Arkansas.

Keep them coming.

mom2collegekids: Loyola New Orleans is a very, very good school.
