This Is Delfire, Help Me Out, Pretty Plzzzz??

This is a non-Columbia question, but I value you guys' opinon too much =):

I was doing my common app when I encountered this problem:

My personal statement/essay have a word count of 854, and when I saw the box for putting the essay in the common app site they told me that the cap is 500, so I chopped it down to 490 (yuck).

But the problem came when I previewed my app and saw that there's a LOT more space, namely this:

"Personal Statement (essay) field displays a maximum of approximately 1800 characters."

Does it vary by college? Or common app controls this? Will I chopped off if I give them 854 words?

According to the website, if you see all of your essay when you print preview it then your college will too. My essay was exactly 500 words but more than 1800 characters. It all came up on the print preview, though, so I sent it.

854 words may be too many...if you got it down to 490 and it killed the essay then maybe there's a happy medium somewhere in between. You could e-mail it to me if you want and I'll see if I can help. (anything to stay away from my family today!)

Well, you could always submit a paper app...
