This is everything I've packed, but I need to drop some weight.

I got some extra stuff, but I need to shave off some unneeded things because I need to get rid of some weight. What exactly am I lacking, and what is absolutely unnecessary? If everything here happens to be necessary, then I'll keep everything and pay to have some of it shipped. Thanks in advance. I'm a Sternie, which accounts for certain things like the suit.

-1 Black suit
-1 White dress shirt to use with the suit
-1 Pair of dressy shoes, same reason
-1 Blue tie, same reason

(should I take more dress shirts or anything?)

-About 17 short sleeve and polo shirts, and about 6 long sleeve shirts.
-About 8 pairs of jeans, khakis, and shorts
-About 20 pairs of boxers and socks
-2 jackets, a sweater, and a sweatshirt, and a heavy wool peacoat
-1 black scarf
-1 pair flip flops, 2 other pairs of shoes

(overkill on any of this?)

-1 Laptop, 1 PSP, 1 Digicam
-Laptop bag
-Sheets, a down comforter, and 2 pillowcases.
-Every toiletry I ever use, minus shampoo for some reason.

And that's EVERYTHING. If anything is missing or completely dispensible, let me know. I'll only be coming back home for Christmas, but I really would prefer to have everything there to begin with. I figure I can get another set of sheets up there, but that's about all I was thinking I would get up there.

I think I might be overkilling on the sweaters and stuff, but let me know if I'm right. My family is convinced that it's Antarctica up there. Do I need extra dressy stuff for Stern? Do I need to pick up a footlocker up there for my valuables? Help appreciated.

You could probably leave behind some clothes. I brought a ton of clothes with me (pretty much everything i owned that fit) even stuff I knew I wasn't going to wear, because I had that "just in case" mindset. If you know you're not going to wear it (it's out of style, doesn't fit the direction you want to go with your personal style, doesn't look as good on you, etc) don't take it.

new york city's an incredibly fashionable place with amazing shopping, and it's likely that the people you meet in college as well as the nyc surroundings will cause you to change up your style of dress the longer you live there. I'm a californian, so i brought tons of "beach bum"-type clothes (shorts, tank tops, hollister, you know the deal) and found that I felt totally underdressed and unnatural in the city. I started buying more clothes in the city piece by piece, gradually changing my wardrobe, and ended up not wearing MOST of the stuff i'd brought initially. It sounds stupid, but it happens to so many people upon entering college! but then again i'm a girl, so it might be different =P

Wow, that is a ton of stuff. I fly in tomorrow and I have 1 bag of clothing and thats pretty much it. Yikes.

But it's a bit expensive to buy clothes in nyc, no?

Expensive? I suppose, but not having to pay sales tax on clothes/shoes under $110 helps =P

depending on where your from...and who will be there with your clothes....can't you have the winter wear sent in a month or two?

I personally think the numbers of boxer shorts and polo shirts are totally overkill. Are you planning to do laundry once every two weeks or something?

maybe its just me, but im taking a lot of clothes. I think I'll have about 5 suitcases. excessive?

laundry every two weeks seems fine to me. It'll cost less in the long run, and also waste less of your time.

And yes, 5 suitcases is excessive... where are you planning to store these suitcases? There's only so much room under the bed. lol

no, my parents are taking them back, when they leave. they all fit into one.

If you want everything, pack what you don't need for the first week or so into boxes and ship them. Your winter things, for instance. When I went to college, I arrived with just a suitcase, having boxed and sent everything via mail. Made things simpler in moving in and organizing, and I collected the boxes and dealt with them one at a time. Most kids take way too much.

cpt, how did you ship them? UPS or USPS? And what kind of costs did you have?

definately bring alot of clothes, you guys underestimate the superficiality of the NYU student body.

Yeah, how do you ship them? And when do they arrive.. before or after you get there?

usps is cheapest, i think

I think you're fine on the dress clothes - I didn't even have a suit until spring sophomore year~

Are you flying? Don't bring toiletries if they're easily replaceable, because it'll be a lot simpler to just buy some stuff at Duane Reade or Kmart or something.

I don't think more than 1-2 week's worth of clothes is necessary, because frankly, the washers only fit about that much. That is, if you want it all to dry the first time...

wow. im bringing six suitcases plus a backpack (my parents are taking back all but one suitcase and the backpack). most of it is dorm/school stuff though, not clothes. my mom insisted on buying all that stuff before we got up there "just in case every store was out." ha.

i didnt think i was being to excessive with the luggage.

NEW YORK GETS VERYYYYYYY COLD SO BE PREPARED!! :) The shopping is INCREDIBLE!! :) It WILL SNOW TOO so bring some type of boot.

i'm bringing two suticases, a laundry basked filled w/ stuff, a lg. box, two small boxes, a file cabinet in lg. box, and a printer (in the box)...plus i have two boards

I didn't think I was excessive...but I def. have everything I need...and it's a LOT.
