This is going to be awkward for me...Please help though :)

Ok, so I applied to Pitt in early October with a 3.4 and a super low ACT (i think it was a 20 or 22 or something) since then I've taken two more SATs and I've gotten a marking period in my school over with already.

Sadly, Pitt denied me (like you guys told me they would) and they deferred me to Pitt-Bradsford, but they denied me with my stats being a 3.4 and a 1570...I took the December SAT and I got a 1630 (1660 superscored) so I would just like to know...Is it worth re-applying to Pitt after my second marking period? (I've gotten a 3.7 last marking period and probably will get something like a 3.5/6 this marking period)

I know a 1660 is still below Pitt's standards, but I made almost a 100 point increase, my grades are going up and everything...what do you guys think? Also, I'm African-American, if that helps any.

(You can be mean as possible; my feelings towards Pitt and CC are kind of indifferent and numb right now and have been since Pitt-Main denied me lol)

Congrats on the SAT improvement but I don’t think 1660 is high enough for Pitt main. What are your Math and CR scores? Go to either Bradsford or CC and re-apply after you have a good college GPA. A year of college with 3.0 and above grades and your URM status should get you into Pitt-Main. Good luck!

Agree with everything here. You need at least an 1100-1200 M+CR for Pitt Main, maybe a bit lower would be okay for branch, but not combined with a low GPA. I’d recommend a year of CC if you don’t do branch followed by transferring to Pitt Main. You can save money and still get the Pitt Main degree.

thanks to both of you guys…but I mean, i did better than 57% of the test takers in the entire US…I got a 550 on math a 540 on reading and a 570 on writing…I may not be good enough for Pitt, but I know I can do better than a CC or a branch lol

I got a full tuition scholarship to howard and I got into Penn State and Temple already…I might just have to settle for one of those lol

^^^
Great schools and good options. Hope you enjoy your choice and do well!

Dear kiddo…sorry to read that you were denied. But I wanted to give you a different perspective in case you had your heart set on Pitt. I have two sons that will be attending there. One is a h.s. senior who had Pitt main as his one and only choice. Thankfully he was admitted but he applied early and had 1800+ SAT score and a 3.8 GPA. He received no scholarship offers or anything but did already send in his deposit.

But what I want to tell you is more about my other son who just got admitted to main after numerous attempts. He started out at a small college in central PA on a paetial athletic scholarship but really didn’t like it there. He really wanted to go to Pitt main but didn’t quite have the credentials to go there so he transferred to a branch campus (Johnstown) for a year and 1/2 with the hopes of going to main. He was thrilled to find out that he was accepted for Spring 2012 and is moving to Oakland on Jan 3.

I do not live too far from Bradford but can tell you that it is a good school with a nice campus if you can handle the climate. There are also a lot of athletic opportunities there if you are into sports that you might not get at main (I know someone who is going to swim there that would never get to do so at main).

The moral of the story is that main is within your grasp even if you don’t go there your first year. But it sounds like you have some real nice options so good luck. But apply again to main…there is nothing to lose by trying again.

btw…I am a Pitt grad too but I feel your pain. I can tell you that it was not even close to being as competitive back then as it is now. That is just a good sign of how great that school has become. So keep at it and good luck!

Hey you’re like me!!! So I applied october but was rejected. I have 3.5 UW and go to a really competitive small private school, and when I applied I had a 1700. My weakest point was math at a 470. I was able to study for a whole month ridiculously and got it up 90 points (I was hoping at least 120) to a 560 and I got my ACT up to a 26 and my math up 4 points to a 24…I was planning an appeal and retook these tests for it. It seems like you also had an increase in your score by a similar amount. If your act math was good, pitt also crosses over act and sat scores to make a new one…so my 24 act math is about a 590 sat, so when you put it all together id have a 1820 sat.

Sorry this is confusing with all the numbers. Bottomline is I know how you feel. If you can get a recommendation from a teacher you know well and did well in their class that will help. I got one from my math teacher bc pitt said they rejected me cause my math sat score and I did well last term with an A. Still try…they told me to go to greensburg btw

Also, maybe your being african american will help. Me being part asian doesn’t help me at all with admissions with low sat scores/math score

@ALLIEISAWESOME Hey Allie…They told me to go to Greensburg as well. Are you thinking about going there?

I think we’re all in the same boat here. I had my heart set on Pitt for about 2 years. Unfortunately, I think my SAT scores are what hurt me, which led to them offering admission to Greensburg. It seems as though Pitt-main is getting increasingly competitive to get accepted to each year.

I got my first letter from them offering Greensburg back in October and I sent new SAT Scores and a new transcript to be reconsidered. Ironically, I was even enrolled in a course there at the main campus this fall and my professor recommended me; but I guess that wasn’t even good enough haha. Then at the beginning of this month they decided to sustain their decision. I don’t have anything against Greensburg its just that the main campus was my dream choice and I am from Pittsburgh so it was ideal haha. So, I’m going to transfer as soon as possible from the branch campus to the Main once I have 48 credits.

Hey, if you go to Greensburg, maybe ill see you there!

My rant is over. 908kiddo is actually my friend…So, I’m sure he doesn’t mind my extensive ranting haha

Wow same thing I was rejected october! I retook sats and acts too and even thought of taking a class there…I CANNOT believe that didn’t help you! Im not going to go to greensburg unless I get rejected from every other school lol I wanna go to another school similar to pitt…what were ur scores?

I go to a really small school near pitt so we know one of the admissions guys there well and he told me it was only cause of my sat math which was a 470. I’ve gone up to a 560 math now…i planned an appeal too and plan to use my new act and sat scores, a letter, a recommendation, and math teacher rec (I got an a in calculus) to appeal to them.

Im gonna send it after break…so well see what happens to me. Im hoping they will then get me into main…

Were u rejected or deferred? I was rejected flat out

The letter said “we were unable to offer you admission to the Pittsburgh campus” so yeah, rejected :frowning: I knew an admissions lady too! She told me what to do and my professor even spoke to her! But I guess all they are concerned with are scores. And my scores were similar to yours as well. The fact that your math score increased that much should help you so good luck!
