A Johns Hopkins University student armed with a samurai sword killed a man who broke into the garage of his off-campus residence early Tuesday, a Baltimore police spokesman said.

According to preliminary reports, a resident of the 300 block of E. University Parkway called police about a suspicious person, department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. An off-duty officer responded about 1:20 a.m. to the area with university security, according to Guglielmi. They heard shouts and screams from a neighboring house and found the suspected burglar suffering from a nearly severed hand and lacerations to his upper body, he said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The student told police that he heard a commotion in the house and went downstairs armed with a samurai sword, Guglielmi said. He saw the side door to the garage had been pried open and found a man inside, who lunged at the student.

Detectives were still interviewing the student and his three roommates Tuesday morning, Guglielmi said. Burglars had already stolen two laptops and a Sony PlayStation from the student's home Monday, according to Guglielmi.

Dennis O'Shea, a spokesman for Johns Hopkins, said all four residents of the house are undergraduate students at the university.

The suspected burglar, whose name was not released pending notification of next of kin, had prior convictions for breaking and entering and had just been released Saturday from a Baltimore County facility, Guglielmi said.

The actual killing is NOT balla, but the samurai sword...haha.
Hopkins is "cutting edge" ;) and sooo "cut-throat" lol

This is why you get an alarm system (preferably ADT), or go to school/live in a nicer area.

But in this case, I would’ve told the burglar to wait, because I’d get a girl to slap him twice. Then I’d let him go and file an insurance claim.
No blood. All good.

Radio report I heard was the guy’s head was nearly decapitated.

Thats why you don’t listen to any “breaking news” on issues like this. Its almost always wrong. Exhibit A can be the Yale killing, in which the media reported very adamantly that the police had someone in custody and that he had failed a polygraph test, etc. etc. It all turned out to be a load of crap.

haha I love the new ADT (or whoever it is) commercials in which a mother and young daughter are at home, a burglar kicks in the door, the mom screams, alarm goes off, he runs away, and the phone rings, mom stops at the hallway phone to answer the alarm guy calling, because thats a smart move

No it isn’t, and he wasn’t murdered. He was killed (justly) by a person he was attempting to victimize.

Once again, this shows society in it’s most unfair light.

A man who lives down the street from me (David Findel, do a google) was arrested by the FBI last week for an $11 million dollar mortgage fraud. He produced false documents that got him money for mortgages that were nonexistent. Needless to say, he’s actually OUT on ($1 million dollars worth of) bail. The FBI raided his $4mil house and repo’d his fleet of exotic cars. He’s expected to get <5 years in prison.

A man from Maryland sneaks into a garage to take some stuff (this is a COLLEGE kid’s garage, what could be in there, a honda civic?) and gets his head cut off.

Although I’m typically a conservative, I think this kid needs to get tried. And if he cant prove beyond a resonable doubt that his life was in “clear and imminent danger”, than he should do some hard labor for a while.

I don’t mean to be all Negative Nancy, but this act will probably impact the life of this poor kid forever, and not in a good way.

BMW - I’m pretty sure the student is claiming that the late burglar jumped at the kid, in which case the home-owner had every right to fight back against an attacking criminal in his own damn basement; the burglar most definitely could have had a weapon/gun himself.

That being said, if the criminal was clearly incapacitated after one blow, then “going in for the kill” was probably wrong, but I believe the guy bled to death anyway.

BMW, you have the right to protect your home. He didn’t know what he was facing. I seriously doubt some college kid was like “Let’s kill this *** hole.” It was probably more of “Oh crap, does this guy have a gun?” It was self defense. He didn’t kill the guy as he was trying to escape, he was killed as the guy came after him.

Remember, the college student has to live his whole life knowing he took someone’s life, even if it wasn’t really his fault (he didn’t ask the guy to break in). That’s punishment enough.

^I agree, it was complete self defense. He probably had the sword just for fun, though, a real ninja would have easily taken off the guy’s hand. But did he have to kill him? I think if someone took one swing at me and I was unarmed I would get the **** out of there fast.

If this kid just “had the sword for fun” then I doubt it would be sharpened.

Without checking again, I believe the house was robbed before.

My guess is that the student took up an interest in the art of samurai fighting techniques a long time before this whole incident and had the sword placed nearby in case of an “emergency.”
