This is kind of an awkward question.....

"so what are your points, don't drink and have fun at college?"

You can have A LOT of fun at college without being under the influence.

Faytal,

I believe you were the one who brought up driving while under the influence of something:
"how many people die in alcohol-related accidents every year? hundreds of thousands.
when people are intoxicated via alcohol, they often are overconfident and think they can drive. when one is intoxicated via thc, they KNOW they are intoxicated and won't drive ect, or will do so much more carefully."

When people smoke, it impairs their judgment. So for you to say that people who have smoke "won't drive or will do more carefully" is really a stupid comment. Weed can effect your decision making meaning people WILL make the decision to drive when they know that they have been smoking. Also weed can cause you to have a much slower reaction time so how can someone who is high even attempt to drive safely? It also messes with your coordination. Smoking and driving is just as bad a drinking and driving. That's the point I was trying to make.

"You can have A LOT of fun at college without being under the influence." - cwryan1

Thank you. Well said. I had a ton of fun in college and never touched a drop.

The first university I went to is known for its excessive partying and drinking. Even the dorm I stayed in had parties during the weekdays. Daily games of beer pong and other drinking games. It got to the point where my whole floor had to have a mandatory meeting about the late night noise and mischief due to all the drunkards. I never lowered myself to drinking on weekdays or excessively in any matter, but I did drink. Not much at all, I can count how many times I drank on a single hand, and I only got tipsy. I've never experienced what being drunk feels like, and I never want to experience it because I've seen what it does to people. You can go from liking a person to hating them. It's incredible how much people change when drunk, and to imagine that they did it so much in college. Only two people out of the 60-70 people I knew who drank daily flunked out. None of them did exceptionally well, but some did above par surprisingly. Less than 30% of people have drank before college, but almost 100% of people who go to a 4-year public university drink at least once before they graduate. I think if you can moderate drinking to a level where it does not affect others or yourself, then there is no problem.

Okay guys, a debate was not the point of the thread. I didn't ask whether it was good, bad, a gateway drug, illegal, or "natural", I asked if it was common at PSU. Everyone has their own opinions on the subject, and it'd be best if we all just kept it to ourselves for this one.

But, thank you for those of you who actually answered the question. I truly appreciate it.

^ what (she?) said.

Yes, lol. She.

"Okay guys, a debate was not the point of the thread. I didn't ask whether it was good, bad"

You posted this on a public open forum and diddn't expect debate? Your fault for doing so.

"I'm just not necessarily into that whole "drinking" scene, and I'm consider PSU less and less because I think drinking every single night and partying 24/7 doesn't seem like the type of environment I want"

Your environment at Penn State will be whatever you want it to be. While there are students that do drink a lot (as there are in almost any college), there are also many students who don't. The student body is so large and eclectic, that if you do decide to enroll at PSU I'm willing to bet that you would easily find a group of friends that don't get wasted every night.

Honestly, I asked a pretty simple question for those who have gone to PSU recently, and I expected a simple answer. Sorry for expecting the best in people :)

bostonfan - Thanks, I was thinking the same exact thing recently, and I'm glad I have some reassurance now.

you didn't get a "simple" answer because it's a major issue in todays education, particularly in college. Both drinking and smoking of any sort.

tajamariee- No worries. Did you get into Penn State-University Park?

Yep, I got into University Park. It's between there, Rutgers, and CU Boulder right now. I just feel that I have to make a decision quick :P

Out of those three I'd choose University Park hands down.

tajamariee, i don't see anything wrong with asking your type of question on a public forum. you just want your answers and there's no better way to get them than from people who have experienced PSU first hand, so all the more to you for asking! the drinking and smoking is going to go on at universities regardless of what people debate through the internet, it's an unavoidable fact.

I thought that was the case, and with the acceptance package they sent a paper about drug-and-alcohol related arrests, and it somewhat went against almost everything I heard. But it IS a huge campus and, as with all big universities, there will always be drinking and drugs. Thank you very much!
