This is painful.

My parents will not let me get a job.
I think I may be able to convince them though. Their excuse "you have too many classes this year and will have too little time to maintain a job".
But I told them that this is similar to a sport EC on game days but not exactly so tiring. And then they said that "jobs are only for people who need to help out their families with money issues". And I even went as far to say that it would look good on the application. Then they said "we'll see".
I want a job so I can take care of my own money and not have to always ask them when I need something. You know, like being independent. And I know a lot of you hate your jobs, but I think it'd be kinda cool, especially if you worked at a job you enjoyed and could get discounts and sales just cuz you worked there. Is there anyone else in this situation? Is this a useless argument? I thought I could handle it with 4 APs and a Governor's School class added to my normal schedule because it really is just like an EC if you go to work at 4 PM and come back around 9. Or am I just kidding myself and my parents are right? I thought you could do your homework there if the job was going slow (i.e. no customers) but this girl told me that it's not allowed and you have to always be attentive to the job. Is that really the case?

Yeah unless you get a security guard job, every job I have ever had (fast food, retail, etc) they will always be something for you to do and homework could never be done. Your best bet would be to get some kind of weekend work, that doesn't interfere with your studies.

A job will definitely look good on your application.

Oh I see. Well that's a really good suggestion joev! I just have to convince them now. And yeah Knavish, I saw on the common application that they even have a section for you to list your job experience, even if it was over the summer. So yeah it looks real good. Hmmm .. well if any of you have ideas of how I could convince them, just post.

just tell them it will only be on the weekend, will not interfere with your studies at all, and if your grades slip even in the least, you will give up the job. Any parents that I know would find that acceptable.

EXACTLY what my parents said!

And I said, I want to be independet and earn my own money.

Then they said, "We give you pocket money. If you need more, just tell us how much more you need"

And I said, "but I want to earn my OWN money so it'll be MY money. I want my OWN money - money I deserve to get"

Then they said "Ok then, this is OUR house so get out of OUR house. In a family, we share. If you don't want our money, get out."

I think they just don't want their family friends to see my work because "students' job is to study." and that they're scared that our family friends will think of us as 'poor'. hahaha it's so stupid.

Sod work. If you must, do it in the summer. But really, try to maintain as much of your adolescence as possible. The real world of working sucks.

lol....I went out and found a job my damn self and even though I don't really enjoy the job I enjoy getting paid and being able to bank my own money...but sometimes I don't get home until midnight (summer)

Hahahahah NoFX! I think that may be a reason too. Geez parents these days. So over-protective.
But thanks joe for the tip, that sounds good. I'll try again tomorrow morning.
And blu that's exactly why I want the job, to get my own money. And I dunno, I usually stay up anyway even if I have nothing to do, so I thought a job would be a good use of time. ANd sirwatson I know a lot of kids say it sucks but don't you think if you worked in a job you liked, you'd have a good time? Like I wanna work in Bath & Body Works and I think I can get the job, but I need my parent's consent. And I think I'd like the job cuz I love all of those lotions and smells, lol. And discounts would be amazing. I know in reality you can't always get the job you want, but if you can now, why not take it.

ahh I know how that feels. I really hate asking my parents for money just because sometimes I want to buy stupid non-sense things, like expensive clothes and it just seems bad to keep asking my parents for those types of things.

The best bet is to find some sort of compromise, like finding a job that didnt interfere during the weekdays. It's really tough to find one like that though, most will probably make you come in at least during the week, but I'm sure you'll figure something out.

I ended up doing freelance design work which wasnt the best choice. I'd be able to make 25-50 dollars an hour for the work I was doing but maaaan, when clients would want revisions at the last minute I'd find myself up till 4 AM (on a school day) working just to please them and get the remainder of the pay I was owed. Luckily though you guys probably wont face those sorts of things with the jobs you take during high school.

"Then they said, "We give you pocket money. If you need more, just tell us how much more you need""

I wish my parents were like that. I get paid by the chore (like 25 cents for taking out the garbage, etc), and even my cell phone comes out of this "bank of children" account my parents made up for my brother and me before we got allowances. I have to pay for all of my own college expenses, including half the price of airfare and hotels for going to college auditions. My parents are always telling me to get a job or to find more students, both of which I've tried. I wish my parents would just give me money, but in our financial situation we can't. I even have to pay for half the price of my car.

Oh, and to those of you who want jobs, if you play an instrument or understand some subject really well, the best and easiest thing you can do is give lessons/tutor. For example, I give clarinet lessons to middle schoolers. I charge $15/half hour, so even though I only have one student right now, that's an extra $15 a week that you wouldn't otherwise have had. All you need is skill, a little patience, and a half hour to an hour a week. When school starts up again, I am going to become a homework center tutor at a local middle school, which pays $10 hour, and I think it's just an hour each weekday, so again, easy money.

Thanks you two, you've given me some really helpful suggestions.
dcfca, ouch, sorry about your job, it seems challenging but you get good pay so it's all worth it. I talked again with my mom and I think she agreed and now I have to ask my dad .. which is gonna be harder lol.
And you know what star, my parents think that education is super important, which is why they don't want me to get this job. They're willing to pay for any tutors I need, any prep books, college tuition, etc. And then during the residency or sometime later in life, I'm supposed to pay them back.
There is a PeerTutors program at my school where they pay you minimum wage to tutor people. Only sophomores and up can be in the program. And it's only an hour after school. I can do that this year probably, I'm not sure if I could do it with another job. But my parents didn't let me do that last year. They saw what happened to my brother when he got preoccupied with his games, so that may be why they're relunctant.
