Congrats to people who have gotten in, to people who have been wait-listed, don't give up!, and if you didn't get in, why are you here?
This post probably won't be coherent enough to definitely influence any of you 2012er's in your decisions, but I want to emphasize what a place this is academically anyway (duh, i know). After only a quarter and a half, I think all the hard work has been worth it. This place will beat you up, prepare yourself, but you'll feel like a milllion bucks when you finally sit down to think about it. Especially after discussing college experience with a few of my friends at other schools, I feel even luckier to be here.
Also, listen to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sei-eEjy4g

In a couple of years, I'll look back on myself and think 'How the hell did I survive that?' I'm already thinking that about last quarter and wondering how I'm going to survive this quarter. Sigh Please get warm soon. And please don't let me have any more pedantic professors.

^ HAHAHA! It never gets warm :)

Kidding obviously, but we have two more months of cold at the least! Bundle up!

Loved the song...

first year is easy as hell. get through second year and see if you're still telling people to come here :)

l o l.............. glad I almost applied.

yep, second year has a bit more... oomph to it than first year, as more classes are no longer undergraduate-only or firstie-driven Core, the people in your classes are undergraduates and grad students who are smart and do all the readings carefully and say brilliant things.

But hang in there, Jack! Fifth week winter quarter is the worst of it.

FWIW, second year has been harder than first for me, but it's been a vast improvement in almost every dimension. I love my classes more, a lot of the first-year housemate "Do people here like me?" drama has dissipated as I now feel one of the house elders, and I've found various niches that I fit into well, which give me both social and extracurricular support. The only thing I semi-regret is that I don't get into town as much as I like to-- I spend most of my weekends on campus, attending student events, parties, etc.

what does that video have to do with anything?

What makes second year worse than the third or the fourth?

Nobody said that.

I think second year was my hardest year too. It's just the adjustment from the core classes as far as I can tell. I definitely liked all of my courses more but they were much harder. The work load was heaviest for me my second year but that's because I took most of my major then. Winter quarter is always hardest because it's so cold, but it will get better soon ;)

Winter quarter is when all the fireplaces are in use in the Reynolds club!

is there a good heating system in the reg?

What kind of question is that?

Of course all the buildings on campus have good heating systems. However, it seems to me that Crerar and Harper are always chilly. Eckhart's always extremely comfy heat-wise.

Sorry, I like warm buildings.

By chilly - Harper can be about 66. Impressive given the ~35ft ceiling, the uninsulated (for aesthetic reasons) windows, and how sparsely occupied it usually is.

I always find Eckhart a little too warm, it's so comfortable it makes me sleepy.

I always thought that Harper was a tad chilly to keep people awake. It's a refreshing zig.

BJ and Reynolds Club (two buildings in which I spend obscene amounts of time) tend to be too hot than too cold. Cobb (main academic building) is decent, though a bit stuffy at times.

I think that the U of C buildings are equipped for the weather :-)

Did you just find out about that song. That song is old news, pal. Let me guess, you read "Best of 2007" on pitchfork.com.

yes, actually haha
