This Is Us. Anyone watching?

I just have to say I LOVE Griffin Dunne. Only problem is that he out-acts everyone else except Austin Abrams (Kate’s boyfriend).

I suspect Kate was somehow abused by record-store boyfriend. Emotionally or physically. Just a few little bits of foreshadowing. Showing up unannounced (boundaries). Declaring in front of everyone that he’s her boyfriend after Kate had just introduced him as a friend. Also, abusers are expert in sniffing out needy people.

Remember when Kate let out that scream at the weight-loss retreat? Connected to history of abuse?

I’m trying to remember the first time we met the vets DH. I thought he was frustrated because she was drinking a lot and he was taking care of everything.

I didn’t read his comment to Kevin as menacing. I read it as, I still love her but geez it’s difficult when your separated wife is hanging out with a hunky celebrity.

I am curious about Kate and record store guy. I didn’t get a bad vibe from him, just a little bit of cockiness. And I didn’t know there was such an age difference.

Is Sophie in NYC for nursing school? Or just to be with Kevin?

@surfcity Did Rebecca ask Kevin and Sophie where they are living (or how they are paying for it)? I may have missed something. I remember the actor playing Kate’s boyfriend from Paper Towns movie. I think a controlling/abusive relationship was hinted at the end of the show. I was surprised by age difference.

I wonder about the husband/Kevin friction and I also don’t see Kevin with Jennifer Morrison character.

Kevin and Nicky are a good storyline, my first thought was “ugh that looks like butter” but don’t seem to remember that container from childhood? Maybe we just opened the top and got ice cream hands!

Love the seltzer and William/Randall/Tess coping with anxiety, proceed with caution though Randall. Great episode.

With the rectangular ice cream containers I think either the short end opened or the bigger side opened up. I don’t remember which it was.

Can’t you still open 1/2 gallon rectangle ice cream containers like that now? I just figured it was THEIR way to open it and not mess with something as silly as scooping!

In the future do we know how old Kevin’s son is?

Oh I did really like the way they were very open about anxiety and panic attacks. Really well done for tv

OK, so how many “life issues” does this show tackle?

Infant death
Adoption
Racism
Obesity
Alcoholism
Drug use (William)
PTSD
Home fire
Parental death (Jack and Beth’s father)
Eating disorder (Madison, Kate’s friend)
Sibling rivalry/jealousy
Homosexuality (William and Tess)
Child neglect (Deja’s mom)
Divorce (Miguel, Kevin)
Poverty (Deja, Randall’s constituents)
Infertility
Anxiety/panic attacks
Depression (Toby)
Teen parenting (Malik)
Blindness
Physical disability (Kate and Toby’s new neighbor)
Partner abuse (presumably)
Domestic violence (Jack’s parents)

On another message board, a poster pointed out that teen Kate’s boyfriend said he found her address on her job application. That was not true. She lived in the apartment when she was hired at the record store. Just some info to file away for the future…

I am leaning towards stalkerish, controlling, abuse as the future of Kate and her BF, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Ice cream is still sold in those cartons. You can lift open the top and unfasten the ends so it lays open like that.

Loved this episode, so many solid, well-written scenes. And I loved seeing William…still miss his character.

@surfcity I think I remember when Kevin was hurt in the football game, they talked about everyone going to college, including Sophie to NYC, and Kevin wouldn’t be going anywhere. I think Kevin followed Sophie to NYC and began pursuing the acting.

Every time I see Tim Matheson, despite his now playing the role of Rebecca’s father, I can’t help but see Otter, of Animal House!

I’m really enjoying this season! Randall played them!

Loved this episode and can’t wait for next week’s.

I literally laughed out loud when I realized Randall had played that other councilman. He’s good. I also may have yelled “no” when it became apparent Kevin was with Cassidy (as he closed the bedroom door behind him, classic tv move for “there’s someone else in here.”)

So many thoughts …

  • I had a feeling Randall was playing them. He is prone to anxiety, and I just didn't see him putting himself in a position that would be so fraught. Also, he had a big-time job previously that likely required that kind of schmoozing. Playing golf was par for the course. ;)
  • The racial stuff was what I found most interesting. I'm so glad that young Randall is finding mentors.
  • I love the honest sex stuff with Toby and Kate.
  • Ugh. Cassidy. I don't like them together, but maybe they'll grow on me. I just want Kevin to be happy.
  • Rebecca's dad. Ugh. I know guys like that. And, in his defense, he was trying to help Jack, but, still, ugh.

I did NOT like the show this week. All the characters seemed to do stupid stuff. The line I loved was when Jack told Rebecca’s father that he was going to marry Rebecca, get a house, have kids, etc. and asked something like “Could he see himself in it?” after Rebecca’s father had asked him the same question earlier.

I liked the episode. I am kind of surprised, but I like Cassidy and Kevin together. I feel like she challenges him, which he needs.

My family cut ice cream like that all of the time. Spumoni especially.

I am still watching this show, and I very much appreciate some of the scenes (this week, most of all, Randall’s “Then you don’t see me”). But on the whole, I find I am fundamentally bored by all of the characters’ current problems. I’m tired of the Kate/Toby obsessions about babies and weight, I’m tired of Kevin being a screw-up but fundamentally a nice guy, I’m tired of Nicky’s self-pity, I’m tired of Randall’s phony political career, I’m tired of Beth’s self-actualization, I’m tired of Tess (?) figuring out how to drop hints that she’s gay. I don’t want to be told that Kate’s problems are all due to being molested by her boyfriend when she was 18. I’m tired of Miguel. I’m not that tired of Jack and/or Rebecca, but their past storylines lack drama, to say the least.

I didn’t realize this until I read your post. I feel so dumb. Will have to watch again.

I didn’t fully get that Randall played them. Of course he did!

I can’t warm up to Cassidy either - in fact, I can’t even remember her name! I also wasn’t thrilled that Kevin picked up that gym staff person so quickly.

I actually think they are giving Nicky more depth and I appreciate that. I have to wonder if maybe HE will end up rescuing/being there for Kevin through some future crisis.

I am getting annoyed at Kate that she is having so many expectations of Toby. He seems like he helps at home and with baby Jack ALOT - but it never seems enough for her. What was it this week that he screwed up according to her? Something really not a big deal but she had to slam him for it.

I just don’t see smooth sailing for Toby and Kate for awhile.

I agree w/@toledo - the line Jack delivered to his future father in law - “can you see yourself there?” was primo! I was sad to see alcohol being an issue for Jack even at that point.
