This Is Us. Anyone watching?

I found it a little sad that Toby is now excited about the baby after he showed interest in the lights.

“Hall Pass” girl is supposed to be a recurring regular this season. I wonder if she leaves her husband?

I thought that Toby’s reaction was realistic. It takes some time to adjust to a kid with special needs. I hope Toby moves in a direction of acceptance and joy.

Is it clear the intruder is real? Preview for next week seem to indicate it may be something he is imagining.

Online I didn’t see a preview and thought that was on purpose. What was in it?

I agree that Toby’s feelings are very realistic. I find that at times it hits my DH harder than me when he sees our own son’s issues/limitations. Maybe it a father/son thing.

In the preview, they showed Jack comforting a young Randall before bed talking about monsters. And a couple other scenes in which it wasn’t clear if what appeared to be happening actually was real (could have been dreams/nightmares rather than real).

I’m rooting for Kevin & Sophie.

I thought the intruder was real and that this event will force Randall to “face the monster,” and successfully so.

I was initially annoyed by Toby’s reaction too, but after thinking about it more, I could see it being a realistic reaction to someone in his situation.

I appreciated Toby’s honesty. What a crappy thing to have to admit. I actually enjoyed Kate’s “behavior” and effort this episode. Jack is an ADORABLE baby!

Kevin
I KNEW she wasn’t texting her mom. I’m not excited to hear she will be a regular if that’s true. I too would be rooting for a Sophie reconnection. One time it has to stick!

I appreciated Miguel taking time to thank Randall. And Randall was supportive of Miguel in his role to take care of Rebecca. I wonder how long until they tell Kevin and Kate - we saw previews of them being ticked off at Randall right??

And the intruder - gosh, that took my breath away. I too wasn’t sure if it was real. Did Randall close the door when he came in the house? I saw the suitcase but for some reason I wasn’t sure if he shut the door. Also, the figure looked a little like a young Jack to me - but I’ll admit I was a bit far from the tv.

I have a feeling Lizzie will turn out to be Kevin’s pregnant fiancĂ©e. Supposedly Sophia Bush will be a recurring character. My guess is that she is not really married, but has some compelling demands in Chicago (sick mother or something else). It is otherwise hard for me to imagine why she would remain in the story. Any thoughts? Am I way off base?

Right? I always told my boys that if they’ll do it with you, they’ll do it to you. Who wants Kevin to hook up with a married woman? Yuck.

Can we talk about that doctor’s appointment? I know this is TV, “suspend your disbelief” and all that, but having attending MANY doctor appointments with my folks in the last few years, it was laughable.

The DOCTOR comes out to the waiting room to get the patient? What about the medical assistant, then the nurse, then sitting in an exam room for half hour. The doctor administers the test? The doctor can make room to go over the results immediately?

I know I’m being silly here, it just took me right out of the story I guess.

And I don’t know what to think about Hall Pass girl. If she really was married, would she have really waited that long to tell Kevin? And whoa, he got champagne and flowers and John Legend on such short notice - if I were her (and single) that might have scared me rather than made me think it was romantic.

But in all, I still love the show as an escape.

I wondered if JohnLEGEND asked to be on the show.

Yes. They advertised for his new album right afterwards so it was clearly product placement. I thought that whole thing was so stupid, so over the top. First of all, I don’t think any famous actor would be on a dating website. Nor do I think he would approach a stranger in a coffee shop. He probably would have people taking pictures of him all the time. Then the whole date was ridiculous. I actually liked him with that woman from AA because everything they did was so normal and not Hollywood. She was also married so it’s not like there isn’t precedence for him hooking up with a married woman. Had enough of Sophie, hoping that stays in the past. Just too much baggage at this point to ever make it work.

I agree the Dr’s appt was silly. My friend’s mom just had the same type of appt last week. She is going back to be tested in 2 months as that was the soonest they could do it. And we live in one of the most dense medical areas in the world. And the Fr would never know that Randall had called 37 times to get the appt.

Sometimes I find this show so down to earth and realistic and other times it’s just as far-fetched as everything else on tv. I wish with such great writers they would stick with the former as there is no need for the latter. It just sort of negates all the real moments for me.

It’s a TV show y’all. Lighten up.

  1. Agreed with Toby's reaction seeming realistic. I know that it's hard for my husband to see my son struggle and seemingly not move forward in life.
  2. Agree that the doctor's appointment was not realistic. And I expected the doctor to say, "Actually, Rebecca tested pretty well!" because that's what happens with my mom and she's at about the same level as Rebecca when it comes to forgetfulness. Drives us bonkers to hear doctors say that.
  3. I watched this episode with my mentally ill son. He's never seen the show before but really liked it. At the end, when I was already broken up about Rebecca, he said, "You know, I think there are some similarities between cognitive impairment and mental illness..." and went on to explain. OMG, I couldn't hold it in and started crying. I've often thought how hard it is to feel like I'm "losing" my mom and my son at the same time. I think my son thought I was just crying because of Mom (hopefully).

I wonder if the intruder is Nicky. I don’t really know why I think so, but I do.

^^^ I thought of that too for some reason.

Didn’t the preview show his face? I thought so, and as I remember it, it was an unfamiliar face. Or maybe I just imagined it, lol.

Still not convinced the intruder is real. Preview showed young Randall talking with Jack before bed about monsters. And an older Randall (maybe college?) talking about not sleeping well and weird dreams. We know he can have problems when under a lot of stress. He just came back from the appointment with Rebeca’s doctor (with Miquel fighting him to a degree). Randall isn’t in love with Deja’s boyfriend. His going up to check on Beth and the girls and then coming back down for a drink of water seemed odd to me. Why wouldn’t he get the drink first? Unless he is already down some type of paranoia path.

And with a show known for headfakes and misdirections, maybe that is what they want us to think. Seems obvious. But the obvious is typically wrong with this show.

One story line they could explore (assuming the intruder is real) is what happens if the police are called to the house of a black family reporting a white intruder. A lot could go wrong there. Randall is in flash forwards. Is Beth?

Preview said this is the first of big 3 trilogy. One big show for each of the 3 Pearson kids or three big shows beginning with what starts tonight?

We shall see.
