OK, what do y’all think of the theory that she didn’t really re-knock on the door? That that was Jack’s drunk delusion? Also, just to make sure … do we know that was their house that burned? Could that have been Miguel’s house?
I’m still going to go with the fact that he died in the house fire, because that’s what they want us to believe. I didn’t get a good look at the personal effects; what was there besides his ring? If there was paper, wouldn’t that have burned in the fire?
So how did you like last nights episode. I thought The daughter was a real brat and the Mom handled it better than I would have. Love Toby! Poor Miguel just never catches a break from Kevin. I’ll be interested to gin out how they came together and the bit of resentment about that.
Seems like we’re getting closer to how Kate is responsible for her father’s death.
ETA: Mother-Daughter relationships are so fraught with baggage. Yes, Kate overreacted, but why doesn’t her mother see the implied criticism in her comments? I wish we knew why Kevin hates Miguel so.
One of the main things I learned from the episode last night was that I had missed an episode last week!
The scene I liked best last night was the discussion between Kevin and Beth, where Kevin revealed that he had ghostwritten Randall’s pitch to ask her for a date and had actually been on the phone with them. I also liked Toby’s “Team Kate” speech a lot, but its coherence and bravery in the moment seemed especially contrived.
I loved the actors playing the teenage triplets last night. And I loved the idea that Kevin has always been playing to Sophie, and that Sophie has always just loved whatever it was Kevin was doing, regardless of quality. One of the things the show does very well is to be extremely romantic with its sense of true love, while being at the same time fairly realistic about the limitations and flaws of the characters in each true love pair.
I liked the episode. I like how they are showing that Jack wasn’t perfect and that Rebecca was being a supportive wife. Often she gets portrayed in a bad light.
Conmama: I think that maybe Kevin wouldn’t have liked anyone that Rebecca ended up with. But maybe there is a back story. I think I read that we will like Miguel more when we know the whole story.
YDS:I see that Kate sees implied criticism, but I don’t really see it. I felt bad for Rebecca because I feel like no matter how hard she tries, Kate is mean to her. Although probably she should have known not to go to watch her sing.
Really? When she said “one day you’ll learn how to work a crowd like this” (or whatever she said) implies that she didn’t work the crowd well. That’s a criticism. She should have stayed away as she wasn’t invited. But because she didn’t she should have just said, “That was wonderful” and stopped right there.
…have you ever had a super critical mother–or been close friends with someone who did?
I loved the line Kate said --something like “No, you wanted me to be the person you would have been if you’d been me.” My mom was like that.
Look, Kevin WANTED her there–and she left–to go listen to Kate, who had not asked her to come. Rebecca had to be completely clueless to miss the fact that Rebecca did not want her there–and that Toby didn’t suggest she come either. And then–in a small bar–she shushes people at the next table who are talking and tells them to listen. Not exactly appropriate. And then at the end she says something like “Some day you’ll learn how to power through a crowd like this”–which certainly wasn’t helpful. It amounted to “you need to learn how to get a crowd like this to listen–I had to do that for you.”
Essentially, she’s acting like the typical Type A parent with a kid who is Type B when the Type A parent refuses to admit that the kid isn’t Type A.
And while Toby’s “team Kate” speech may have been a pit too pat, it was entirely appropriate.
I do like/worry about Kevin’s acting for Sophie. Kate was her dad’s favorite, and Randall was the mom’s favorite so poor Kevin was a triplet middle child looking for love and Sophie has been there at every turn. Doesn’t feel like that will end well.
I did love the scene between Beth and Kevin. And it shows that Kevin was there for Randall at times.
@“Youdon’tsay” It’s funny how differently people can interpret the same characters.
Kevin was the popular kid. Kate and Randal weren’t. Sophie was Kate’s friend----and Kevin essentially took her away from Kate. Not that that was his motivation–it wasn’t. He just really liked Sophie. But he only went to Kate’s party because 'Sophie was going to be there. That’s the reason half the kids at the party showed up—because Kevin was going.
I get confused at times by the portrayal of Kevin. Most of the time, he’s about as deep as a deep dish apple pie—and then suddenly he’s Mr. Insightful. I DID think Randall asking him for advice on how to ask out Beth was totally believable though.
Kevin was popular, for sure. But maybe he became such a big personality because he was trying to find a place where he shined. He really seems the most dysfunctional of the three to me, though they all have their things, obviously.
I agree about Kevin’s portrayal. I think it’s funny that both he and Kate have a lot of self awareness around their issues though they can’t seem to find a way to get clear of them.
