This Is Us. Anyone watching?

I really like the friendship with Kate. She was sweet - I have a best friend - classic. I appreciate Miguel being ready to protect Rebecca from Kevin. I wonder if we’ll get to see Rebecca’s journey after Jack’s death. I’m one of the few that doesn’t dislike her, I get the role she’s been put in, first married to the guy everyone loves, and your role is to be the support and disciplinarian. Then being alone for so many years and marrying someone who gets your history - but your kids don’t accept.

I’m ready for that little boy to come to Randall and Beth.

So, we know it was a fire, Kate thinks it was her fault so he probably ran in to save her or her dog. I’m really hoping to not actually see that episode.

I have the same theory, @eyemamom, about the dog. I wonder if we will find out before we go to the Olympic hiatus.

Olympic hiatus?? Noooo!

Sterling K Brown (Randall) had tweeted yesterday that be ready to “take notes” on the nights show because there would be a clue to what is to come. So I knew something would be revealed. Have to say, I was thinking there were a couple of possible “clues” - the smoke detector of course but also I’m wondering about the cat - either William’s or Kate’s - remember that at this time Kate had a cat and it was shown for just a quick second last night.

I love the way someone described above Randall/Beth’s relationship and the subtle cues…of her being an independent strong women and him respecting that but also him treating her with such respect.

Randall will go back to work - the real estate thing can certainly be a “job”. It may not be making the $$ that being a businessman made him but he will work.

I was thinking as I was watching Kate as a teenager that she really didn’t look heavy - and clearly she wasn’t fitting into a size 7 dress. Would she have been hiding her weight loss from her family? Did they not notice??? Was it a “7” in marker on her arm???

@brantly - Early in the program, before they leave for the mall, Rebecca asks Jack to remind her to get batteries without saying anything about their purpose. At the end of the program, as @deb922 described, you see where they intended to use them.

I thought she did fit in the size 7 but then took it off and tried the 5 which was too small but
made her feel fat which she was more comfortable with…? I was also confused about whether she
was letting other know or what regarding the loss.

An earlier episode shows Rebecca driving by a burned out house, so wouldn’t the smoke detector batteries fit with that? I just wasn’t sure if it was their house.

Yes, it was their house. Jack clearly died in a house fire. We just don’t know the circumstances.

We know the house burned down, but do we know that’s how Jack died? Maybe Rebecca was still carrying some of Jack’s things in the car and he actually died earlier for some other reason. The writers have certainly left lots of clues about a house fire - I’m just not sure that the fire is related to Jack’s death.

Hmm. I never considered that. They show us the incinerated house, Jack’s personal effects in a bag similar to what you’d get when a person dies, and Rebecca wailing in the car in front of the burned house where fire marshals are milling around – but he died a different way? That would be a real head-fake.

Maybe Kate blames herself that her mom forgot to buy the batteries because she walked away from Rebecca at the mall and Rebecca was frantic trying to find her.

But Jack’s personal effects show no signs of being burned or charred. So it isn’t clear they were in a fire. So I agree that we know Jack died and we know that the Pearson house was destroyed by fire. But we do not know how the two are related. Cast and writers have said we will know how Jack died by the end of this season. There are still 6 episodes to go in the season.

And, this is a series. They want a season three. Things will not wrap up nice and tidy in a bow by the end of this season. The story will get more deep.

That is one of the things I really like about the show. There are constant look backs that give more detail, color and texture on past events and its all interwoven with current life. And sometimes those look backs are directly related to the current life events at that time (such as Kate trying on the dresses as a teen and talking with Madison in the present) and other times the look backs plant seeds for something that is coming later. Show is very creative in that regard. And in that way, it is us. Our lives are all products of all of the events/people/places that come and go during it. We just don’t have someone splicing everything together to make it easier for us to see how it is all related.

Also seems safe to me to say that Milo Ventimiglia will have a big role in Season 3. Once we learn the circumstances of his death, those look backs will continue. At least I expect (and hope) so. In that way, Jack will always live on. And that is true of those who are no longer with us in our own lives.

I was wishing they hadn’t shown Randall with the red-haired girl because at the end of the episode with Rebecca driving by the burnt out house, they also showed Kate with the dog, Kevin with a cast, and Randall with a red-haired girlfriend, things we had never seen before. But they’ve introduced each now, so I feel like we’re getting very close to the point where Jack dies.

I hope Clooney is a recurring character!

Who was Clooney?

The previews always cut off on my DVR - I’m mad to even miss a minute!!

Clooney was William’s cat. He said the name was ironic because he was an ugly cat. Was a stray that William took in. One of William’s friends took care of the cat while William was away. But the cat ran away sometime after William died. Roams the streets again.

When Randall & Beth go back to the apartment building, a little boy is feeding the cat in one of the apartments. At least that’s what I think I saw.

“Yes, he got mad at Kevin for his attitude with the coaches, but the sit down with Jack, Miguel and Kevin also showed him dismissing Kevin’s devastation at a career ending injury.”

I just see that as Jack being a glass is half full, optimistic type. Less about being dismissive.

“I usually love Randall but didn’t love him as much in this episode. Who takes a call during an interview? Who even has their phone on?”

I don’t think he was keen on the job or interview anyway. He was just doing the interview for his wife.

“Was it a “7” in marker on her arm???”
Yes, she had inked a 7 on the inside of her wrist. Later, in the present day, they showed her with a 7 tattoo on her ankle.

Question: When Randall asked the red-headed girl to go out with him, what did the Magic 8 Ball say? My tv is too small to make it out.

It said “Don’t overthink this Allison.” Based on seeing her with Randall at the end of the season premiere, she presumably says yes. Though I would think their relationship needs to develop a little more before she would be by Randall’s side at Miguel’s house. Also not totally clear to me why the kids are at Miguel’s house at that point.

“Later, in the present day, they showed her with a 7 tattoo on her ankle.”
Ignore that. I rewatched a part I was watching when I got a phone call and misinterpreted what I saw. It’s just the wrist of 17 year old Kate.
