I see Toby’s working out that same way @mom2and does. I think the writers are contrasting how Toby and Kate are dealing with their stress - him by working out obsessively, her by eating.
The actor who plays Toby had a fat suit which he wore in previous seasons. I guess that it was decided to lose the fat suit and make it a part of the storyline.
The rumor in the first season was that Chrissy Metz (as part of being cast) would lose a substantial amount of weight. Since that seems to not have happened.
If I were to choose which way I would chose to handle stress, I choose Toby’s. I don’t think it’s obsessive, not even close. A healthy way to handle a very stressful situation. Which IMO Kate is not doing.
Agree with @deb922 . I’ve mentioned before on this thread how much Kate’s obesity bothers me. I wish hers was a fat suit! It is so dangerously unhealthy and she (Chrissy) clearly can not manage to lose any of the weight. If anything, she looks heavier than ever to me. I find it concerning enough that it interferes with my enjoyment of the show. Good for Toby for exercising and for the writers for showing that someone can “shed the fat suit.”
I find myself having to bite my tongue during every episode to keep from criticizing “Kate’s” weight. But Chrissy Metz is a real human being who is certainly well aware of her size and the risks associated with it. Should the producers have written her out of the story when she didn’t lose weight? Should they have replaced her with another actress like shows did in the 60’s.?
^^^ I don’t think anyone is saying that. She is someone we have sort of found compassion for on this show - and yet, we know that while her character Kate is one thing, IRL she is real human being with some serious, serious weight issues. It’s just very distracting - I find myself not seeing her as “Kate” but as “Chrissy, OMG you are so large, I am so worried about your health!”
True that health or poor health is not always visible - and maybe the fact that the show uses her weight as part of the story line is also a little disturbing.
