I do feel like if you have straight A's 12 AP's and a near 2300 sat score that you stand as good of a chance as any, I stand behind that, obviously there are many variables that could change that situation either on neg. or pos. note but assuming this is a well rounded, highly accomplished individual then YES I believe they stand with the best of them. AGAIN THIS IS MY OPINION. I didn't at all say I am superior to anyone else applying but that I feel that I stand a fair and strong chance. END OF STORY.

This is sad but true, and honestly, at Harvard you are COMPLETELY on your own once you're past freshman year (and even then the advising is very much do-it-yourself). She'll have to survive here, and Harvard is not easy by any means--my friends and I don't even consider people to be "real" Harvard students until they've completed one reading/finals period (and woe to those who try to be "the best" and take 5 classes their first semester...). Good luck to her, and good luck to you!

TRANSLATION: She used her dad's influence to game college admissions and strategize her way into Yale, which she will now reject in favor of either Stanford or Yale.

I for one will take grotongirlie at her word. I do believe she wanted to go to Yale, and changed her mind afterwards. Why exactly would she "game the system" if she didn't want to go to Yale in the first place? Nobody applies early someplace they don't intend to matriculate if there is already another place that they really really really want to go to. In grotongirlie's case, there are 2 (!) dream schools that she wants more than Yale. Now if she wants H and S that bad, do you think she'd play around and EA to Y for kicks? No.. if she knew where she wanted to go during the EA period, she would've done everything in her power to get accepted there (EA to H or S).

July, what a breath of fresh air you are! FINALLY someone who is capable of seeing this whole situation for what it is instead of trying to attack me because I got into Yale EA and haven't yet committed. Of course if I knew H. was my dream school I would have applied there first, knowing I stood the best chance as an EA candidate.

I have never on any thread come across a more difficult, ready to attack, antagonistic bunch as I have here save for a few of you fellow "rational thinkers"

Evil...I am just downright dumbfounded as to what to say to you, you sound downright ignorant with all due respect...I pity your way of thinking more than I can be angry with you. YOU have no idea where I will end up and you know what I just may well CHOOSE Yale, which frankly is none of your concern. The words "gaming admissions" is a new term to me, I followed what's called a system fair and square, I was not nearly as calculating as so many of you are.....in fact I feel like a babe in the woods by doing it the right and honest way. I have no regrets of any kind, but do question the integrity of many on this particular thread, it kind of chills my blood thinking of how some think.

Ok, I believe you--you're a smart person who is working through the college admissions process. That's cool and I know that you will get into your dream school. I hope you have a nice experience there.

So, my question to you is, what point are you trying to make here by posting? (That's an honest question, not belligerence.) You don't seem to have any questions and you seem rather put off by other people's criticism.

Groton, using words like "END OF STORY" just makes everyone view you more and more negatively...

12 APs...12 APs by junior year with 5s on all of them...Otherwise, you're just average :D.

just be happy uou got into Yale. If you weren't legacy, who knows what could have happened? It's like the other girl who's using the influence of her family as well.

If you are so angry that she is trying to use money to get into Harvard, can you imagine how people who don't have ANY hooks or legacy status are frustrated that legacies have such a better chance of getting in? I'm not saying that you didn't work hard, but you should really look at things from another perspective. If someone wasn't a legacy for Yale like you (say an Asian applicant with 2400 SAT scores) he can still easily get rejected. Seriously. Be in someone else's shoe for once.

actually kami, yes if you want to know I did get 5's on ALL of them, now go ahead and attack me for bragging. End of story simply implies that to me its over, lets be done with it and move on, no more of this back and forth, tit for tat, is necessary. It doesn't mean you're dismissed if thats what you are implying. It seems like pretty much everything I do annoys you, speak for yourself please not "everyone".

Mallomar, thanks for your kind wishes, I do think I will get into a school which hopefully will ultimately be the right school for me, even if I don't realize it now, I am only 17 and still learning, :)

My point of posting as I have said initially is the one part of the system IN MY HUMBLE OPINION that is flawed is what I said, is it really fair for someone like my classmate who is an average B student, very mediocre SAT scores (for an top tier school) and virtually no real staying power with any of her ec's, to get into the best school (arguably) in the world because her dad happens to have a tremendous amout of money? She liteally be getting in not based on really anything she has accomplished but on the banking of her Dad's money being spread across the H. campus..........my question was about THAT, not me, and this thread turned into a hategrotongirlie fest except for a few kind mortals out there, thank you:)

This could be viewed and is viewed from both sides, some feel its fair, others like myself do not. I was curious as to how people feel about this and if it is very prevalent in their schools..........thats the long and short of it, certainly not the most controversial thing ever written about here at CC.

123 orange, I AM I AM IAM happy I got into Yale!!!!!!!!! How much more clear do I have to make it..I put myself in peoples shoes everyday for God's sake! Stop making me sound so self absorbed, I just worked hard thats all, I mean this girl even goes around saying "its my dad who wants me to go there so bad, I know I am going to crash and burn once I am" but he just wants to brag to all his friends that his d. goes to H. THAT is annoying to me, I mean even she has the good sense to realize she doesn't belong, but its her dads dream that keeps this alive. I think legacy still carries more weight, I mean at the very least you know that the person who originally got in on his own merit has hopefully passed on some of those "smart genes" to his s. or d. haha............money is money, its green whether its from someone just having won the lotto or a or a nuclear physicists and doesn't have much bearing on the PERSON GOING TO COLLEGE. I have a feeling this thread will live on and on and on..................

honestly....chill out.

You got into Yale. If you don't get into Harvard and Stanford, you'll still have an amazing college experience.

Next time, don't start threads like this looking for sympathy.

You'll just get roasted.

Nonot true. i would be willing to bet my life there are more people at harvard who are poor and got in by there grades than people who got in because their daddy is rich. get over yourself. you make me laugh.

PS princeton counts a elite right? Don't like 50% of princeton students qualify for financial aid?

You all fail to see the simplicity of the situation:

It may be unfair that the system isn't totally meritocratic. However, the number of students who get in by virtue of their bank accounts is very small compared to the number of students who get in by virtue of their talents, hard work, and character. Remember this: the wealth brought in by these rich students is enjoyed by all the other students. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be getting as much financial aid from Harvard if it hadn't accepted a few well-off students in the past.

You could start advocating for some type of reform. Assuming that you truly believe the educational system should be a meritocracy, how would you set the guidelines for that? However, if you believe that we are inherently unequal, then your acquaintance would be perfectly justified to use her resources. You do indirectly bring up the need to reform the growing disparity between the rich and poor. But that's another story and history...

why are you guys still talking? epsilon basically nailed it

Sheesh, some people here are unnecessarily harsh. Grotongirl, just remember that your classmates who can buy their way into Harvard only make up a small part of an enitre class. You've still got a fine chance and I don't think that admissions would overlook a good candidate just because they already took several weaker legacy candidates.

And Kamikazewave, grade inflation at Harvard is not what you think. People get good grades because they work themselves hard.

grotongirlie, congrats on getting into yale! i know you must be excited and obviously you are qualified not by judging by your stats but by the fact you got in...

as for harvard girl, it sucks but i think maybe you should give her more credit than you think. if she gets in, obviously her father helped, but she was still qualified. HYP doesnt admit anyone with 400 sats bc of a legacy. sure, you can argue that there are people MORE qualified, but that doesnt mean that harvard girl cant handle it. im a little surprised you are so bitter esp when you are a legacy yourself and (regardless whether it helped you or not and you could have gotten in on your own merit) but i see your point about the game not being completely fair

i am a legacy myself, and it definitely helped me get in and people hate me for it, but i dont have any guilt because what can you do about it? there are always going to be people that hate that you succeed and they dont, regardless if you deserved it....

i think the problem is most people are bitter about the admissions game at elite colleges so most people send you off on a guilt trip if you happen to get into a good college...and so thats why most people on this thread are rude because they know they have a very slim chance of getting into yale and they are very jealous you got in....so keep that in mind

anyway, im sure that whatever happens you will have a great college experience, and my advice for you is to not spend time and energy being annoyed about harvard girl: just do your thing and have a great college experience

Groton, if you really have 12 5s on 12 AP exams, then congrats, you'd most likely had been admitted anyways. Who knows though. If you use a hook however, you're still using something that you got by chance of birth alone. And you did use it. That other girl used a hook, but so did you. What about the rest of us who don't have any of the hooks? Think about it, the people who should be ****ed most are people who aren't legacies anywhere and have no money as well. Like the guy they mentioned in the article. Sounds a lot like me.

Yeah, honestly, why are you complaining? You used the fact that you were a legacy to get into Yale. Stop complaining about a girl who is using her daddy's riches. It's not like you're much different than her - you used a factor that you didn't earn. Try again when you're not being hypocritical.
