Hi I’m not sure where to put this but I’m looking for some advice. I am a high school junior who is college researching and I want to know my potential for college admissions. I’m interested in business and I want to get into a business program that will help me excel in the business world. I’m not sure what major in business I want.
I recently took a visit to U of Iowa and liked the campus but I think I want more academically.
Here are some quick stats:
Public high school in Iowa. Nothing special but a good public school.
4.0 UW gpa (ranked #1/180)
Have taken the hardest classes I could in my school and have earned a lot of credit through dual enrollment kind of classes but not necessarily many AP. I’m taking all (two ) AP classes that I can next year though
.
32 ACT… could maybe get it to a 33 in spring
ECs consist of being on state championship teams in my sports and solid leadership opportunities/roles in my school along with a good amount of volunteering.
Where should I look into for competitive business programs? (Maybe even honors business programs)
Are schools like UPenn, Notre Dame, or Berkeley out of reach for me?
I am just looking for some honest advice!
University of Michigan. Indiana University (lots of scholarships). Notre Dame, Emory, Ohio State University.
Much depends upon your level of financial need.
Avoid Berkeley as no financial aid grants are awarded to non-residents.
You have a shot at Wharton, which is a reach school for everyone. You have good stats. Good luck!!
You might want to take some AP or SAT II math tests.
Penn and Notre Dame are reaches for most everyone, high reaches for you. Indiana would be a match.
As stated above, the UC’s give no financial aid to out of state students so unless you parents are affluent and can be full pay exclude them.
Consider USC, BU, Northeastern etc. as matches too.
Iowa would be a safety.
Honest? Take a good look at what your targets want, beyond stats and some championship teams, some unspecified “leadership” activities, and some hours volunteering. You’ll need to assess your match, which is different than what makes a kid tops in high school. It’s like you’ve stated the bones here, but not fleshed it out. That’ll be vital when applying.
And take a look at the Common App and supps, for those schools. Get an idea of what they like to see.
@Publisher
Thanks for the info! I planned on visiting UMich soon!! And would a calc ab AP test work? I’m taking the first level of calc this year but I didn’t sign up for the test because I figured I was getting credit from the college in which I was dual enrolled anyways. And that’s the last calc offered so I’m not sure what I would take. I am taking AP stats though.
@f2000sa
Thank you! If I got accepted to Wharton that would be amazing.
@TomSrOfBoston
Would you say UPenn and Notre Dame are possible then? And is one more likely than the other ? I will definitely check out Indiana!
Thank you!!
@lookingforward
Thank you for responding to the post, but is there any chance that you could clarify what you mean by how I need to assess my match?
Apply early to Indiana University Kelley School of Business.
Any math based SAT II or AP should suffice.
Some schools require two SAT II tests.
I got waitlisted at Notre Dame this year, BUT I only had ECs in basketball, track, and volunteering with pretty much no leadership. I had 34 ACT, but a worse gpa than you(I had a few Bs) with the hardest curriculum in my school(a lot of APs).
As for Notre Dame, if you really want to go there, I think you can definitely get in if you:
- Continue doing well in school, higher standardizied test scores would definitely help
(look at their avg, they obviously seem to care about test score)
- Visit(I never had an official one which might have hurt me)
-Obviously good LOR(mine were not that good I think) and essays might help(message me and I can share ND essays)
-Being Catholic might help
-Being from Iowa might help(less competition in your region?)
-Doing more EC stuff will always help
Overall, I don’t think Notre Dame is such a “high reach” for you; a.k.a. You definitely have a chance.
-I was on the border of admission(WL) this year, and I think I had some noticable flaws(LOR, ECs/Leadership, no official visit).
Message me and I can share essay stuff and ACT stuff(went from 31 to 34 when I took senior year)
