This may get repetitive, but what are my chances?

Hey, my name is Tom and I live in Maine. I have just begun to consider boarding prep schools for my secondary school education and it would be great if somebody would tell me what my chances are. I'm probably only going to be applying to Exeter because of the Harkness Method, but if people would tell me if my chances at equivalent places, that would be appreciated as well.

Here are my "stats"

I'm taking Honors Geometry (have already done Algebra 2 equivalent)
Was in National Spelling Bee (Only one from my state)
Got first in my state for the Johns Hopkins test in Math and Verbal 2 years in a row.
Lived in England last year and attended an English school.
My dad's boss is the head of the alumni association at Exeter (he suggested I go there).
Play guitar
Good writer (have been published w/ my dad)
Play basketball, baseball, tennis, and would like to start crew
Applying for Financial Aid
I am white

Anyway, thanks for any help that you can give me!

what's ur average? do u have any awards at all for like sports, art etc.?

basically all A's, but like I said, I've been away for a year.
I don't have any awards for art or sports, but I could try for some this year if you think it would help.
I have plenty of teachers/principals that would give me a positive recommendation

I'm obviously not an expert but you look pretty good stat-wise... I'm taking Honors Geometry too, and I think it should help a lot.

If I were you, I wouldn't apply to just Exeter. Apparently admissions can be unpredictable and you'll probably want other options. A lot of other schools use Harkness. Wherever you go in the top 20 or so schools you'll probably be challenged. The difference between Exeter and the others is like the difference between Harvard and Dartmouth... both Ivy League, fantastic schools, but of course Harvard has all the prestige.

What grade are you applying for? You look pretty good, but don't try ONLY exeter. Admissions really are almost a lottery among good applicants. Try andover, deerfield, st. paul's, groton, hotchkiss, milton. There are a million places (ok, not a million, more like 20) to consider.

I'm applying for prep (ninth grade). I'm not sure about applying to other places. I hadn't really considered boarding school as a realistic option until now, and I'm not sure I would want to attend and make my parents pay that much if it's not perfect for me. I might check out andover, hotchkiss, milton, and deerfield.

What the hell, you're amazing:
"Was in National Spelling Bee (Only one from my state)
Got first in my state for the Johns Hopkins test in Math and Verbal 2 years in a row."
These 2 things alone ought to get you in.
Do you know your dad's boss at all? Have him write a rec.

thank you, I think I'm amazing too! (joke)

dont be too sure. i'm not trying to discourage u or anything, but there are hundreds of applicants with amazing grades and other credentials, with plenty of awards, achievements, etc.

exeter isnt the only school with the harkness method. many other schools use it too.

check out boardingschoolreview.com

and to see what kind of chances you have, you might want to check out the CC archives, of prep school threads from years ago, the people list their stats and later say if they get in or not. and exeter is terribly difficult to get in.

how can you find those earlier threads?

I think I might apply to Andover, SPS, and maybe Deerfield or some schools in Maine. It costs so much, though!

Tom, to find those threads you should use the Search tool. Look at the top of the page on the toolbar.

omg..

you're so in.

ty. cross my fingers!

Are you taking the SSAT on Oct 14th?

Probably..

if you are you have to sign up for it in the next 15 days or something, I think!

Yes, I know.

:)

please no absolute statements like "you're so in", please, or "you're so gonna get rejected".

Don't tell me what to do.

Obviously he knows that I don't know for sure that he's in. I dont' think there's been a person yet who hasn't said he would probably get in. To satisfy you, I will rephrase that.

I think you're so in.

Happy?
