This May Sound Ridiculous But...

So I was admitted for the spring semester at the University of Southern California, and despite that I am still strongly considering USC over some of the other better ranked schools I was accepted to.

Long story short, am I able to go to school to one of those better ranked schools for the fall semester, then decide to go to USC for the spring if I so please? USC has a policy where they “don’t recommend” that one does this, but it seems entirely possible, though potentially unethical.

Again, it may sound ridiculous but I just want some answers. thanks.

You need to clarify with USC if this is possible.

what if i decide i want to stay at the original school though? i’ve heard personal anecdotes about this happening but i don’t know the procedure in which to undergo

I don’t see how this is possible unless you’re full pay

I infer that the OP is full-pay. You should ask this of both USC and the other school you’d consider. If USC is explicit that you would be a first-semester freshman, then you might be wasting time and money going elsewhere. You should find out exactly how many transfer credits they’ll allow. You should also figure out what the deposit and payment timetable is if you do decide to spend the fall at another school. They might expect a lot up front.

what is full pay? and my intention is to give my first college a chance to test the waters and see whether or not I would want to stay, then decide whether or not i take the spring semester at USC. if that helps create any sort of context.

That’s something you need to call USC about.

Full pay means that your parents would be paying all costs at both schools.

You need to check with USC if you can go somewhere else for spring.

Did you get a FA pkg? What is in it?

?? Why the heck are you a spring admit with those stats???

College admissions are getting harder. OP, I think one of the reasons why USC doesn’t want you to go somewhere is probably you might like that school better and forget about USC.

USC has rules about this. You can attend another college prior to your Spring semester at USC. Students go to both CC and traditional four year colleges. You are correct that they don’t want you enrolling as a matriculating student as you could be taking the spot of another student. At the end of the day I guess you could do it especially if they don’t explicitly say they would rescind your admission. Ethically speaking, it feels wrong.

You’d have to call USC and talk to someone about this and see what they say first. It’s kinda like having your cake and eating it too and both schools (fall school and spring school) will feel used. If USC is down, you’d have to talk to someone from the fall school and see what THEY say. You might be going through all of this in your head and the fall school might not even allow something like that.

Well, I think colleges have the upper hand until April1. Now it’s your turn, but make sure it’s kosher and legit with them. If USC let you attend CC for the first semester then why can’t you attend another college.

You have two threads going on this. This was my response on your other thread:

Congratulations on your acceptance! An interesting question. What I would look at is if any classes you take in the fall semester, wherever you attend, are transferable. It could be that you would spend a lot of money in the fall with no credits to transfer. This may be a ridiculous suggestion to you but if you REALLY want to go to USC why don’t you take some classes at a junior college that you know WILL transfer and cut down your time to graduate? Just a suggestion…

I also agree with @GamerGal27. You could be taking the spot of someone else WHO REALLY WANTS TO GO TO USC. It is their dream school. So you may wonder about the “ethics” of your plan but truthfully I would think about your fellow applicants. There is someone out there that would jump at the chance to attend USC. If you’re not feeling it, don’t go. Give the spot to someone that REALLY is dying to go.

Also, when you say, “So I was admitted for the spring semester at the University of Southern California, and despite that I am still strongly considering USC over some of the other better ranked schools I was accepted to.” Please don’t feel as though a spring admittance is a slight to you in any way. I do not know WHY you are a spring admit but they obviously think you would be a great addition to their school since you are accepted. Maybe just sit down and make a list of pros and cons of each of your top 2 or 3 schools and you may get a clearer picture. Have a heart to heart with your parents. It could be that afterwards you will see your best path.

@mom2collegekids I think USC was very competitive this year. I was flat out rejected with a 2270 SAT, 34 ACT, 3.92 UW, 4.46W and pretty decent ECs.

Yeah. Honestly I don’t know why I was a spring admit either. I probably would’ve committed to USC ages ago if I was simply admitted. I’ll make sure i talk to people at USC and gauge what the situation is. Does anyone have any personal anecdotes relating to the matter?
