This or that?

Im only in 10th grade yet but I want to have a plan out in front of me. I live in NY.

I've picked 2 things that im interested in doing for a career. One option would be to go into computer science for programming, which im sure there are a bunch of people on this board that have experience with. What are your opinions on this? How do you like it? I've heard good things. But also lots of bad things like the getting shipped to India, Lack of girls. (Yea that would be a big loss for me) For this I have no specific school as of yet that I would want to attend. But one thing I would love to do would be to go to England for a few years, I have lots of family there and I enjoy being there.

And my other option would be to go into Music technology. Yep, my two passions: Computers and Music. For this I know what school I want to go to. Berklee in boston. (www.Berklee.edu) I know some people who have gone and they would be a help in getting in. This would be a much more interesting job than sheer programming. Although im not as sure if it is as reliable and if they bring in as much money. I also though of doing both, but I'm not sure yet.

To tell you the truth im leaning more towards the Music side right now. Im sure it would be 10x more enjoyable. And even if programing makes a considerable amount more money I wouldn't care.

So let me here your opinions.

bump. bump. bump.

Hey...what music stuff are you interested in?
Styles?
And what music tech stuff have you used before?

I know several good musicians who were rejected by Berklee..not to be a downer but do you have a good music theory background? Apparently that was their downfall....

I have been taking Theory for the past year and I've learned so much. And trust me I'm learning more every day. My main instrument is the guitar but I'm picking up the tuba next year which is an extremely obscure instrument. My instructor's principle instrument is tuba and he is an alumni of Berklee, so I know he can help me out with that. I plan on making it my principle for Berklee. I plan on training my ear alot more in the next year. But yea thats my plan. As for music tech, I havn't really used anything =/. I only know about comp technology: C++, other software like photoshop. But I'm planning to learn.

bump........

Hey VMattyV...
It used to be that Berklee was very easy to get in. The acceptance rate was over 70% if not more. Auditions were not required. On the other hand, it's notoriously difficult to get out successfully from the place. Their philosophy was that they would train you once you got in.

I know they are starting to implement the audition soon...either this coming year or next year. So its a completely different admissions process in a sense.

Why not a school like oberlin where you can study at a conservatory as well as get a degree in compsci.

Well If I was to major in one of the tech majors, then here are some of the carreers they list:

Careers in Music Production & Engineering
MIDI Engineering, Music Director, Producer, Program Director, Recording Engineer, Studio Director or Manager

Careers in Music Synthesis
MIDI Technician, Programmer, Performing Synthesist, Music Sequencer, Sound Designer

How hard do you think it would be to get one of these jobs? Supposebly its pretty competitive, but I dont have much info on any of them

Lol...sure.
VMattyV...I'll send you a PM later about this topic.
Are you going into tenth grade or 11th?
I might be able to give you some advise about what to do for the next few years for prep.

Going in to 11th. My grades are really bad :( Im gonna do really good next year though. But my music grades are good.

Bumping this old ass topic
