This really hurt... (just rejected Berkeley)

I just rejected Berkeley at 11:59pm. There are so many reasons for me to go to UCLA and only like one reason to go to Berkeley (name recognition). But still, this hurts.

Who else has had to reject what used to be their dream school? When will the horrible pain end? ^_^

Hey man, you made the right choice. Semester system is way too long.

Don’t I know it. That’s one of the major plusses of going to UCLA.

I shouldn’t feel too bad, cause I know some people here didn’t get in. But I’m super old, okay only 26, and getting into Cal was really exciting after so many years of drifting and working and studying. Oh well.

Yup. I rejected UCLA. I wanted to go there FOREVER and it was my #1 choice until their financial aid department basically screwed me over. Oh well, their loss. I am ready to study hard and make Berkeley proud that they admitted me. :-)

Haha, I spent like an hour staring at the “University Of California, Berkeley, Admitted” pin, thinking of changing my SIR the last minute. I never thought that Cal would admit me in the first place (I applied there just to see the outcome) and I definitely never imagined rejecting Berkeley. I believe I will be happy with Business Economics in UCLA, though (after I will get it) :]

Hey, log on to AIM ; )

have a similar situation where UCLA was my “dream school” while in HS and when I started CC, but ultimately could only find one reason to attend (“overall name/ prestige”) compared to the multitude of reasons to attend UCSD for my circumstances (major, location, etc.) I guess ones’ opinions change with the times…all for the wiser.

Hey DJ at least you’re going to UCLA for the right reasons right? There are people who choose UCLA over Berkeley for it’s “environment”.

Truth is, if CAL accepted me I would of submitted my SIR in a heartbeat then.

You people are insane. What is the fascination with Berkeley on this board? It’s like the minute Cal comes up there is circ-and-jerk. It’s a great school, I got in, I rejected it. It really isn’t superior to UCLA. They are both top tier schools. Certain programs are better at each college, but to dismiss UCLA or even UCSD as somehow inferior is a joke. I could see you differentiating between those 3 and say UCSC or UCR.

Berkeley has great recognition, but so does UCLA. I did a travel study the other summer with UCLA in Rome, and everyone there knew UCLA as being one of the best in the world. Not to mention in England, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. At least those were the countries I visited. Hell my friends from Peru and Ecuador talk about UCLA the same way they talk about Harvard. Not sure why, but they do is the point, lol.

You should be ecstatic to attend UCLA. And as far as recognition goes, in the real world, no one will differentiate between graduating from Cal and UCLA.

I agree with the post above. For undergraduate, Cal and UCLA are almost the same.

The rankings people use to compare the schools on this subsection are typically graduate rankings, which sort of reflect undergrad but are not an accurate way to rank undergrad programs.

After undergrad, you can evaluate which school is better for your specific study. From what I heard graduate school is way more important when applying for a job in the real world.

Hijinx-Who are you referring to here? I just read every single post in this thread (including mine) and I have yet to see anyone here mention that UCLA is inferior in any way. I didn’t go there because they offered me $1800 in financial aid compared to Cal offering me over $10k. So with all due respect, chill out.

^ I should add, because my post sounds a little snarky, that I was a little saddened when I turned down UCSD, UCSB and UCLA. All are great schools and my community college experience hasn’t been easy. I was also a little hurt when I was rejected by USC. I had no desire to go there, but again, it’s a great school. I think that we are all very privileged people to be going to such great schools. I am sure that there are many people that would kill to be in our position.

I guess my point is that when a school like Berkeley, UCLA or any of the other UCs accepts you and deems you worthy of becoming a part of their “family,” it’s not easy saying no.

I did feel a little bad turning down all the UCs that accepted me, except Berkeley. They’re all great schools, and I was excited every time I received an acceptance. I really appreciated their offers, but Berkeley was my goal though, and it makes the most sense for me in almost every way, not just name recognition. You made the right choice.

You’re right Hijynx99, but I hope you didn’t mistake my sorrow (I exaggerate ofcourse) over turning down Berkeley to mean that UCLA is inferior. It’s not.

But I dreamnt of going to Berkeley back in the day, for more than just the name, and now that is the only reason I would go. Hell, I’m going to UCLA over CSULA because of the name (and the excellent anthropology program). Ultimately, there was no real reason to go to Berkeley besides its reputation, which is on par with UCLA, so I might as well go to UCLA, which has the quarter system and the Bio Anthro that I want and the simple ease of not having to drag my kid out of his excellent pre-school that took forever for me to get him into.

Hijynx99… what is a “circ-and-jerk”? That’s all I could think about after seeing that part of your post

I mean I’m guessing you think that’s what people are saying when they say “circle jerk”…

anyway, gave me a good laugh haha

Lol we have always just used the term circ and jerk. Circle jerk didn’t sound as catchy :p

I turned down Cal and UCLA and it sort of shocked me both times. When I decided to transfer, Cal was my great shining hope.

Statistically" (spelling…its 2 AM…) Cal is superior to UCLA. UCB is top 3 usually while UCLA is top 15… But when you weigh the pro’s and con’s, and decide suicide is not the right path for you, yeah UCLA is the winner…

What stat is Berkeley that far ahead of UCLA in? I thought they were much closer in most of the rankings.

that’s not true… they’re not that far apart on rankings. If you look at the current US news report and like princeton review… UCLA is only three or four rankings below Cal. They’re both great schools, so I think this competition of which is better is really pointless. People should just go where they truly feel they belong and not just where their parents want them to go or which is higher up on the rankings.
