This school should have everything i like, but...

I'm a rising senior and when i looked at schools, I looked primarily for schools around the south with good academic reputations, school spirit and support for sports teams and medium sizes. I really like University of Richmond Emory and Bucknell. I visited Wake forest in march and I thought it'd be my first choice before I visited because it has a good reputation and I felt it lacked a pretension that other schools had (for example encouraging interviews and giving students the option to submit standardized test scores). But when I visited there I was less sure. I heard it was a really welcoming community but I didn't feel that welcome when I visited even though I'm i guess the stereotypical student cause I'm white lucky to be privileged and go to private school in the northeast (but half my family's from the south). I felt like everyone was just wearing their greek letter shirts with athletic shorts and nikes or button down shirts. everyone just seemed the same and i just didn't get a great feeling. but then before I really thought I'd like it and on paper it seems great and the other schools I like most would argue are similar. do you think I just had a poor visit experience or that I should just rule this school out?

well down in the southern states (i live in that area), a lot of students do wear those clothes. if you are happy with the academics and the campus is nice, then still consider it. What people wear to a campus doesn’t define anything about them or the school.

yeah i guess i should have made that more clear, it just seemed like there was a feeling of homogeneity and exclusiveness. The academics and campus are fine I’m just unsure about the community

Since you’re a rising senior, I’d suggest applying to all 4 schools and making your decision after you know where you’re accepted. Ten months from now everything could be a lot clearer to you.

Good luck!

D graduated last year and was in a sorority. There were certain days that the sororities wore their Greek shirts – perhaps you visited on one of those days?

In the end, though, only you can decide which school will be a good fit for you. Wake was a great school for D, but she’d be the first one to tell you that just because SHE loved it doesn’t mean that you (or anyone else) will.

As an aside, did you know that the same architect designed the campuses at both Wake and Bucknell?

That’s the same feeling I got when I came for admitted students’ day. I wrote off the homogeneous, preppy feel, matriculated, and ended up transferring after just a year. The academics were great, facilities were beautiful, and the people were nice, but the social environment was blech.

I’m not saying the school is a bad place or anything. But it is fairly homogeneous and preppy, and there’s simply no ignoring the presence of Greek life. For some people, that environment is great, but it’s simply not me and I wish I had gone with my initial gut feeling and chosen somewhere else.

Many sororities pick accepted students days to all wear their letter shirts. I find it to be sort of intimidating but that’s how it is. I find it a little odd that you like Bucknell but not Wake; I find that a lot of students either love or hate both, although I’m sure that there’s a reason you liked one better than the other.

Not every school will be everyone’s cup of tea. Maybe Wake isn’t the place for you. Then again, Wake was my 7th choice overall … and now I can’t imagine going anywhere else. Just some food for thought.

Yea, Sororities definitely wear their shirts on Campus days (if that is when you visited). Recruiting starts then.

What day did you visit?
On some events frats and sororities like to show of their colors but most people normally wear a simple t-shirt with shorts.
I don’t know what you’re talking about but people here are really kind and accepting. I guarantee you that you’ll know everyone in your floor of the hall by the end of your first day.
