This Stinks

Nope he graduated with his class. Still in the Army from what I understand as well.

Not being able to do a pull up is not going to prevent you from getting an appointment if you are well qualified and well rounded with a nomination. There was a detailer at the summer seminar who claims to have received his appointment without being able to do one pull up.

George Rash flunked his PT test, the two mile run twice and had one last chance to pass, which he did. The point is many people have PT problems it's how one handles it that matters.

If you are a shoe in academically, that may help you significantly right there. While I can't attest to WP, going to USAFA my CFA scores were average at best, but I didn't have issues getting in because of academics. Be a little optimistic, everyone has their challenges. ;)

The pull up is really a test for "average" weight.

The most effective thing to do is lose any excess weight. But still those who are above avergae height will find it tough.

Son has gotten it to 3 after 5 months of rigorous lat pull downs and negative pull ups. The negative pull ups are get means to get into the chin above bar and then lower yourself down as slow as you can. This is a killer though and they do not have much tolerance, I understand at least 3 need to be done, even with great scores in other areas of the CFA

uofmhopeful, I am in the same boat. As an offensive lineman, I am maybe a little rounder than I should be (6'3 230), but not big enough to be a corps squad candidate. I did alright on my CFA...
bbthrow 87 ft
pullups 2 (i know)
shuttle run 9.4 s
situps 76
pushups 50
mile run 7:14
if only there was a benching event...jk
I figure that if I am a good candidate and not morbidly obese (and I am not) West Point will decide that as long as I am motivated (which I am), I will be able to deal with the physical requirements while I am there. The fitness assesment is only 10% of the total candidate score anyways. My biggest concern is getting past all this medical stuff with my bad eyesight.

TampicoTrauma

PM me. I have a thought on playing college ball at an academy and getting an Army commission. The Army Ops commander at Kings Point is a West Point grad class of '95 and can give you some perspective on both places. He's a terrific soldier.

For MOST cadets (even the most physically fit) there will be some physical challenge at West Point. If its not the APFT, it might be plebe drowning, if not that it might be the IOTC, etc. As someone mentioned above, its not "if" you have a problem its "when", and HOW you handle and overcome it is what matters the most.

uofmhopeful: once again, go to the YMCA or wherever and look for the assisted pull-up machine... basically a pull-up bar with a lever near the gruond that pushes your body up. I did that before I could do many pull-ups. And running to lose weight is certianly the right thing to do!

shogun: I'll be a plebe in a few months, so you have got to tell me what "plebe drowning" is!

What is the "average" amount of pullups?

Does it matter how you grib your hands, wether your knuckles are facing towards you (like in the picture of the link someone posted), or are facing away from you?

8, I believe, but as people have said you can get in with less

Yes! Here's the deal: Back of your hands should be FACING you (yeah it's harder that way :) ), thumbs need to be under the bar, and you have to go down until you're hanging there.

If you look at the USMA site you can find specific instructions

Harri,

"Plebe drowning" is a required course where you learn to swim "army style". I hear it's a lot of fun.

Harri-san

There are videos you can download from the USMA website (dept of physical instruction) that give you an idea what to expect with "plebe Drowning" as well as lists of the requirements to pass the class.
