I know that this isn't directly related to Cornell, but I figured that others applying/attending Cornell might have similar interests- so I was wonering if anyone could help me with some ideas of what I should do this summer. I tried for njsp and gov school-creative writing but was rejected from both. I'm a big writer and reader, but I love science too! Genetics/Neuroscience is my favorite, but I only know about these topics from watching lots of ngc, discovery, history and from reading every magazine/journal/newspaper I can get my hands on. I've taken biology in high school but that's as far as my knowledge on the subject goes. I would love to spend the summer reasearching, shadowing someone with a cool job, or volenteering somewhere. I think I'm going to write some letters and see what happens, but I wish I knew more that I could do. It's prob too late to get anything, but I'm going to at least try. If anyone has any ideas for me please comment!
Thanks guys,
E

Volunteering is always cool. I spent all of last summer studying for the MCAT but volunteering was the one other thing I did (mainly at soup kitchens and tutoring). Then again, I didn't really do anything the summer before MY freshman year.

I spent half of last summer in Israel, and the other half giving tennis lessons (I'm a cornell Freshman). But, this is between Jr. and Sr. year of HS, right? Just do something you enjoy. It is important to do something productive and reflects your interests though, as colleges will look at it closely. Whatever you end up doing, just don't do "nothing."

My experience from last summer...(between jr and sr year) : I took a Business Management course at Marist College for 2 weeks in dorms to get the college experience and show I can excel in college (got A) -I then volunteered 9 hours a day monday-thursday at a camp for inner city children with financial disadvantages (For the kids to pay for the camp it was like 20$ for 2 weeks or 1 week or something like that...SUPER CHEAP!) and then 4 hours at the local soup kitchen every Friday. ...I was really busy lol. This Summer is more about working for money for college though since all I did was volunteer last Summer and now I need money hah.

p.s. If you volunteer try to find something you will be passionate about. I played sports with the kids so it was a ton of fun.
