I'm in the process of selecting which UC to attend. So last week, I visit UCB and decide to take in the city-- see if I'll like the living environment and stuff like that. I'm at the UCB bookstore and I'm thinking about getting some school apparel when some old guy starts hitting me with his cane. It wasn't hard, but it was enough to make me extremely angry. I ran away like a lil b____h because I didn't really want to deal with the nonsense. But I asked for the store mananger and told him what happened. He told me that I should just ignore him. *? I asked him to kick the guy out of the store because he actually assaulted me. He then said it wasn't necessary and started making excuses. *? Everyone in the store was giving me the evil eye as well. Am I wrong?

Is this a joke? If it’s serious…then yeah, you’re wrong.

Haha, looks like you’re not a fit for Cal’s culture (don’t worry, neither am I…)

This is not a joke. I mean, I really enjoy the school and it’s a world class education. This will not affect my decision. But I just wanted to know if any of you have any stories about life at UCB and what I can do (or not do) to make it more enjoyable. I would like to say that everyone I’ve met, from counselors to students, have been gracious and really accomodating. But that one day at the bookstore really peeved me.

so how is it the last straw if it wont affect your decision

hahahahahahahahahahaha

“I really enjoy the school and it’s a world class education”

You will get a world class education at all the UC’s…

You chumps idealize Berkeley so much, and will probably be in for quite a surprise once you get there.

just wait until the local HOBO undresses you with his eyes.

bonus awkward points if you’re the same gender as the hobo. Hey, it is right next to SF…

Another one of anchor’s bitter-angerfests!

I am giddy with anticipation.

Hello Trippss.

I live in Berkeley and what happened to you is pretty much the norm out here. What you experienced here is the same as what you would see in San Francisco. There are a lot of homeless people and aggressive people as well. It doesn’t even matter if you are minding your own business because people will come up with legitimate excuses to harass you. I usually ignore them because it is not worth escalating the situation.

I remember one time while I was waiting for the bus a homeless guy who smelt like urine and barf started coming very close in my face and threatened to follow me wherever i was going to go. I kept moving back from him because I wanted my personal space but then he would keep on getting close to me and ask me “are you scared?”. Yes, I was scared and ****ed off, but what can you do? I just decided to walk away from the stop all together. I just pretended that i got a phone call and quickly got away and he didn’t follow me. It sucks that you have to alter your plans when you come across situations like these. You really have to have thick skin and a lot of patience to encounter harassing/degrading situations like these.

mobilemayhem is right, it happens a lot.
Just ignore those ppl and don’t let their behavior affect your future… seriously, just get throught it. don’t be angry if you’re going to live here for another 2 years… learn to deal with that…

You’ve got to wonder if they’re so aggressive because the go-to response is to tolerate their behavior

not to pull any more straws or anything, but did any of you guys hear about that shooting that happened in Berkeley today? It’s scary to hear about all this crime going on there.

[Trend Today: Berkeley shooting](http://trendtoday.blogspot.com/2008/05/berkeley-shooting.html)

Man, another killing? This is kinda getting bad…

Hm, according to the article, “Berkeley police spokesman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said the victim and the shooter had an argument before the shooting.”

Ah, I guess this is where years of dealing with customer service pays off?

So remember… don’t argue in Berkeley.

Hmmmmm… Maybe that’s why everyone out here feels free to do whatever they feel like doing. I thought it was the whole free-spirit vibe. Nope. Everyone’s afraid they’ll get shanked. I guess from now on I’ll let the *****fest guy do his thing without making any comments. I’ve go too much to live for. :)

Wow. Apparently I can’t write the word *****.

But it’s spelled with a PH… These censors are good.

it was definitely interesting seeing homeless chilling in various campus buildings without anyone giving them $hit
