I understand innocent threads on here that look for honest answers about college life, campuses, majors, etc. It's the chance threads that make me cringe. What does a person that gets a 2390 on his SATIs, has 300 + hours of community service, a lot of awards, and multiple leadership positions honestly expect when they ask "what are my chances?" "Oh, no buddy, you're not getting into college. Don't even try."

I want anyone's honest opinion. Have you done one of these threads knowing you are an incredible student looking for attention/ an ego-booster? I hate to say it, but that's what it looks like. Sorry for the rant; I should probably just stay away from these threads haha.

Top college admissions are extraordinarily difficult. Many of the seemingly ■■■■■ posts are actually very nervous and high-achieving high school students who are not sure if they have the mettle to make it to the top colleges, in fact many of the apparently ■■■■■ posts will not make it to HYPSM.

A ‘2390’ is merely a qualification; the true determination of success is based upon the reactions to one’s ECs which are the things that will impress adcoms. While there are certainly ego-seekers and absurdities on this site, many are merely trying to improve their chances with the feedback they get.

Whether or not this is a healthy response is open to debate but it is not all as ridiculous as it may appear.

What you say is true to a degree. While I dont think that it is anyones primary goal when posting a thread, it is often a secondary reason(even tho most won’t admit it). All of us are smart and pretty much all of us KNOW our chances before we even post the thread so people are just looking for reinforcement. CC chances are harsher than reality however because you get so many top people together so their doubts fester, they/(we i guess) know how low the admit rates are so we think that there’s no way all of us stand a good chance. The reality is CC users are a tiny number of college applicants, even to top schools and especially the chance thread CC users. The other thing I find funny, even tho I myself participate, is that all the people who ask for chances, chance others. All of this stems from the fact that CC is an involved intellectual community, we have common things to talk about and therefore we talk.

From my experience, it is normally the higher achieving students who fret about their future MUCH more than the lower achieving ones. It’s a strange coincidence but to some extent it makes sense.
There are, however, kids who come here to brag about themselves and look to “strut their stuff”, but that is true about anything in life, really.

Many chance me students are International . Many need an ego boost . Chance me posts boost the number of posters which means more advertising dollars .

I agree with everyone. I guess if you are worried and need some reinforcement, this is a good place to get feedback and blow off some steam. It just seems a little ridiculous sometimes :)

Sometimes kids don’t have much cash to spend on apps and can’t qualify for fee waivers so they’re forced to make choices about the schools where they can apply. One of the criteria for them Is how likely are they to be accepted. Some kids do that for this reason. Others need reassurance or sometimes, an ego boost.

I kind of did make my chance thread recently for some reinforcement, but I also made my thread about finding new schools that fit me. Chance threads are not merely for chancing, but for suggesting additional schools.

For me, I made a chance thread because I sincerely want to know whether or not I should apply to a top ivy. I have these unique, out of the ordinary e.c.s, but my statistical standing with grades and whatnot are not very good at all. So, for me at least, it would be very useful since people have told me mixed reactions (some amazed, some not so).
