This weekend's S2S!

S2S trip report day 1
We decided to head to OU a day early so D could drive all the way and not feel rushed. This is our second visit, third actually if you count our whirlwind visit two weeks ago for her audition for the School of Music. The first time we spent a lot of time exploring the campus and areas near campus. This time, since we have more time, we decided to explore areas of interest father a field. D will have a car on campus so I know she’ll likely do some things in the general area.

Our first stop was Turner Falls. OMG! They are just gorgeous! We just stopped at the observation area near the curio shop that was closed and didn’t actually pay to enter the park. The vista was amazing the water looked very clear and D is looking forward to returning to do some serious hiking on those hilly trails, so different flat Norman! This is so up her alley!

Next we checked into the hotel. That was a bit of an adventure, the hotel is sold out and several people where checking in and others looking for rooms. When we got to our room we found a king size bed and a little sofa. S18 is tagging along for this trip and there is no way that DS, DD and I are sharing one bed! Upon further inspection the little sofa is actually a pull out. Problem was it was brand new and still had the packing strap in place that prevents it from opening and covered in plastic and no bedding. The hotel staff was very nice and explained they has just replaced the furniture and must have overlooked the packing material on the pull out bed. It took three different people to deal with it but it was handled very quickly and DS is so happy he doesn’t have to share a bed with me and his sister.

Next we headed off to Oklahoma City as I’ve never been before. Earlier in the trip I mentioned to D that I’d like to see the Oklahoma Memorial in OKC and was stunned to learn that she had no idea what I was talking about and had never heard of the worst act of domestic terrorism in our country’s history! Kid got straight A’s in AP American History and had never heard about this?! Needless to say she got a history lesson on the way! She wanted to she the art district and it was a little less impressive than she expected but really enjoyed looking at the houses and architecture in the neighborhood. Then we headed to Brick Town I had thought we’d eat dinner there but our timing was off, There was some sort of Monster Truck thing that just let out as we were arriving and hundreds of people were just leaving the event and looking for a place for dinner. Brick Town reminds me of 6th Street in Austin. Nothing really jumped out us as a must eat here. We decided to eat at Charleston’s in Norman. It was still early so we got seated right away and the food and service were good. Now the kids are in the hotel room working on their weekend home work and the work they will miss next week. I’m hanging out in the hotel lobby to not disturb them. The hotel lobby is very comfortable (lost of furniture, tv, WiFi and a bistro that sells wine and snacks) and a fun place to people watch:-).

Looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow and then meeting some CC folks at S2S at OU!

Lovely report! Please let us know about the rest of your visit!

Any one at s2s want to meet me for a glass of wine in the lobby of the hotel? I’m in a green jacket. Dont ake me drink alone!

S2S Day two
This morning we slept in a bit and the kids worked on more homework. DD drove to College Corner and was surprised to find most of the shops didn’t open until noon, it is Sunday, don’t know what she was thinking. We had lunch at Yamato’s Japanese Steak House and Sushi it was ok, I’ve had better but also worse. We went for lunch, ordered off the lunch menu, the server took our order and then returned and said since it was Valentines Day they were only going to serve from the dinner menu for lunch which was way more food than I wanted. It was just odd, we’ll likely go back again but with lower expectations.

After lunch D wanted to hit the mall because she had to buy some b-day gifts for friends, while we were there she found a winter coat she liked at Eddie Bauer for 40% off since she doesn’t currently own a winter coat we thought this might be a good investment for winters in Oklahoma!

We were able to check in for the S2S event in the hotel lobby when we returned and then headed back to OU. We meet another family from TX that was having the Full pay at UT vs. Almost Free at OU dilemma. Trust me, if you aren’t from the Austin area (or anywhere in TX I’d guess) you have no idea the pressure there is for high stats kids to attend UT!

We had a brief presentation and then a tour of the school followed by a dinner with a scholarship presentation. I enjoyed the presentation even though I was pretty well versed in the facts. It was nice to hear from current students, graduate students and parents of current students that are NMF at OU. I didn’t care for the meal at all but that could just be me, I’m kind of picky about food;-)

After we got back to the hotel I had the opportunity meet up with @oneundecided from TN and a Mom from St. Louis that has a DH on CC while a group of kids got together.

Monday DD gets to have individual appointments and I’m really looking forward to that, this is the reason we are here as we have some very specific questions that I think will be better answered face to face. So far what I’m most surprised at is how many kids/parents say they have already decided to go elsewhere have travel her for this event. This doesn’t make sense to me at all.

Tomorrow, which is already today, starts with breakfast at 7:00 so I better get some sleep!

3scoutsmom Thank you for typing out your S2S Event reports. I read them and appreciate your efforts. Just as you say, it does not make any sense to visit OU for 2 days when you have NO intention of going there. Possibly the kids want to go to some expensive LAC or IVY and at least one parent is hoping the trip will change their minds. Saving about $250,000.00 over 4 years rather than attending a WASP or IVY appeals to the business sense I got from my M.B.A. Then, if she gets great grades in OU’s Honors College we can afford to help her with costs at a top-notch medical school.

S2S day three

This was the day was the best day, if not most tiring day so far. We needed to get up earlier so the three of us could share the bathroom, pack up and check out and be down for breakfast by 7:00. Found some CC lurkers from IL (don’t worry I won’t out you! We had an issue with our hotel bill upon check out, I had given them a credit card for incidentals when we checked in but for some reason the things I had charged to the room were not showing up on my bill. The staff were were appreciative that I pointed out they were under billing me and figured out that they had mistakenly charged all my purchases at the Bistro (including a bottle of wine) to OU! Yes OU treats NM parents very well but I didn’t expect them to pay for my libations and it took the hotel staff a while to figure out how to fix it, but they did get it fixed before I finished breakfast.

We stopped to get gas on the way from the hotel to OU and only paid $1.17 a gallon (we did see it for $1.16 across the highway from the hotel but it was out of the way and D’s Rav4 has a small gas tank so it wasn’t worth the effort to go out of the way an extra $0.01 off a gallon.

At the morning reception President Borne gave a very nice and touching speech. I was taken aback at well he is aging. This man still has it and really was able to connect to both the students and parents in the audience. After this the NMF kids broke off into individual or small group presentations from various departments.

Just before Pres. Borne’s speech, I realized that @WImom94 's DH and DD were sitting right behind us! I wish we had more time to talk!

Big thumbs up to Tyler Nunley! He did an amazing job of meeting every one’s needs. I’m sure we had some of the more off the wall requests, being our second visit we wanted some very detail questions answered. We met with someone from food and housing and when he couldn’t answer our detailed questions, he went out and pulled in a the proff that actually teaches the RA class and gave D some emails for other staff that might have more resources for her. D loved sitting in on a honors class and several students stayed after class to answer her questions and offer their thoughts (all very positive). Seriously they made her fell like ‘queen for the day’ everywhere she went!

When she meet with the Comp Sci department about her intended minor, she was offered suggestions on classes to take that would “level her up” so she could go on to a comp sci major for Grad School if she wanted without a Comp Sci BS. The Honor’s adviser went over her four year plan to see if it was really do-able to do her major and four minors (some very unrelated) and still graduate in four years. Yes, it looks like her plan will work and yes I know unrelated minors are pretty meaningless but this is what she wants to do. If she can do it all in four years I don’t really care what she does, she’ll likely change plans along the way but it’s nice to know that her ‘dream plan’ could work if she wants stick with it. Tyler Nunley suggested another course of study that he thought might interest her and now she’s off researching that too. Its a good thing that OU’s NM scholarship is good for five years at the rate she’s going!

We wrote a check for her commitment at the bursar’s office and now have an appointment for phone registration on 5/18 the first day of registration and we don’t have to make another trip to OU just for registration!

The kids that were there for S2S set up some sort of group text (@undecided I think it was your D that initialed this!) and they have been exchanging info and D thinks she may have a possible roommate for the fall:-)

It was a long but wonderful day. I am old and out of shape and stairs and walking from one end to campus to the other at a brisk clip have just about done me in! We did get a ride in a cart at one point when appointments werespace too far apart but timed too closely together for which I am very grateful for!

D is thrilled with her decision and so our we, OU might not be for everyone but it’s just the right place for my D.

@UTilitarian sorry I didn’t run into you, but I’m really looking forward to your report from student staying in the dorms!

So after a full day at OU we drove to Dallas (arrive about two hours ago) and will be touring UTD with S18, likely NMF. I can’t wait to hear what he thinks about the differences between UTD and OU! I am very tired and sore and just hope I’m up for another campus walking tour by tomorrow!

And BTW it’s way more stressful having your 16 year old drive 75 miles an hour on the interstate (the speed limit) than driving yourself! I was ok when D drove all the way from south west of Austin to Norman but the two hours that S drove from Norman south have cause many more gray hairs even though he did a great job. It was his first time doing highway driving over 55/60 mph. He very wisely asked me take over as we neared Dallas…I am so not ready for him to drive on his own even though he is a very good driver!

Glad you had such a great visit @3scoutsmom (and glad you didn’t have to deal with the weather like last year!).

S is a very happy freshman at OU and I’m sure your D will love it.

You were probably exhausted when you posted…the OU President is David Boren.

Oh if you only knew how exhausted I am! Thanks for the correction!

well oneundecided is very definitely decided now. She loved it, and I am very excited for her. Her only concern at this point is how she will choose from all that OU offers-- minors, study abroad, clubs, activities, research-- her college-life appetite might be bigger than her plate- but the 5th year option will definitely allow her to add some extras. I think my Ds favorite aspects of the weekend was meeting some of her future classmates and talking research with a professor in her intended major.

Thanks for the great summary, @3scoutsmom! I was sorry I couldn’t meet you on this visit, but we will have more opportunities in the future! Boomer Sooner!

Was anyone else who attended interested in the medical humanities program?

If you have a D named Haley please pm me. Trying to connect kids with CCers I get confused by actual names!

We did not spend too much time thinking about UT. TAMU at least had some money to offer. All UT had was S1’s girlfriend. Fortunately, they are both smart enough to realize they will do better apart. So far, so good.

Anyone else on CC signed up for this year’s S2S on Feb 19th and 20th?

Considering 3scoutsmom’s report above, did the S2S visit convince many to attend OU?

It sounds like many people attended last year, even though OU was not high on their list.

I can understand this, and wonder whether the S2S visit turned many around.

@heidoscop My D and I attended last year; she was fairly certain that OU was the right choice for her, but wanted to visit when school was in full swing (she had only visited in summer prior.) The S2S event was very well done; and just reinforced that it was good choice for her. She met several others there who are very much a part of her circle of friends now and they began a ‘groupme’ to keep in touch. I think many of the parents came away with a much more positive reaction, and some were definitely swayed by the OU spirit and welcoming. No regrets here… just this morning I got a text from my engineering D about how much she is enjoying one of her gen-ed distribution courses.

My DD did not attend S2S. She is a National Merit scholar. She visited during summer as well as during the spring semester while students were on campus. She really enjoyed her visits and felt very wanted at OU. She has enjoyed her first semester and is enjoyed being back this week. She was glad to see her friends when she returned. I do not think she has any regrets. Boomer Sooner! Oh, also she is not a sports fan, but followed OU football the entire season. I think she is hooked!

Thank you both for the observations!
Glad to know a non-sports lover can fit in and also be drawn in to OU football.
The S2S should give some sense of what the NMSF students will be like.

The National Merit students really bond together. It creates almost a res college type of feel among them. Almost all of my DDs friends are NMF students. She is making a other friends in classes, but primarily hangs out with the NM kids.
