Here's the background on my little dilemma.
I have put off doing my CMC essay which is basically about someone who has "helped shape culture and thought". Now i'm writing about Dr. Seuss, whom I love.

here's where my craziness kicks in:
would it be a horrible idea to write my essay in rhyme? I'm being totally serious lol. I always write short stories and stuff at school inspired by Dr. Seuss, and I'm not too bad with rhymes as long as I have a rhyming dictionary. Also, CMC is a giant stretch school for me so whether or not i get in is completely based on these essays

So what do you think? i will probably end up doing it with or without the blessing of CC. after all i have nothing to lose!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!

ps. jk about the whole "greatest essay" thing. i meant to change that. WHOOPS. but i'm serious about the whole "crash and burn" thing

I love the idea. I say do it. CMC is a liberal arts college so I expect they would encourage creativity. But you should be careful, it might get annoying if the essay is too long. If that's the case maybe you could just do the beginning and end in rhyme? That would leave a lasting impression without being bothersome. Good luck!

Yeah, I agree with whollycow. You might still be able to get away with writing the whole thing in rhyme, but try to keep it as succinct as possible.

That's a ridiculously awesome idea, by the way.

well i wrote the whole thing in rhyme, but it's kinda short
i'm almost done- anyone want to read it when it's finished?

also fyi:
i went all-out dr. seuss for the beginning- it was really fun
but for the end i stuck to general abab rhyming and basically got to my point. it's a little over a page, but if you were to condense it it would be about half a page so i think that's a pretty good length considering it's a poem

Hey ilk, mind if I read? It sounds awesome! I can just picture the sleep deprived admissions officers sorting through the standard essays and then coming across yours, lol.

thanks to everyone who has read this!
it's very interesting- i haven't gotten the same comment twice. most people just have one little thing to correct, like one stanza that's off or one word that's wrong. all your comments are really helping it come together!

I would love to read it! and those CMC essays took up a lot of time. I am so glad I finished in November! CMC will definitely value your creativity!

once again, all your comments really helped me make my poem sound better. i really appreciate all of your help, and to everyone applying to school right now good luck!

NOOOOOOOOO WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT WRITE ABOUT DR. SUESS!!

here is a passage from Peterson's Best College Admission Essays:

DON'T even think about mentioning popular television shows, movies, musicians, or actors, regardless of how significant they are to you; and please don't mention any Dr. Seuss book. (The wastebaskets in admissions offices fill to the brim every fall with Dr. Seuss essays.)

DO NOT WRITE ABOUT DR SUESS!! i hope you didnt submit it yet or you can forget about going to CMS

College Essays
"DON’T even think about mentioning popular television shows, movies, musicians or actors regardless of how significant they are to you. This includes Dr. Seuss books as well. Also avoid popular classics or fiction that many other people have already analyzed."

thanks for the advice. a little too late, but i'm sure it will be okay

besides that sounds more for a general essay, like the common app. this one is specifically about a someone who has changed culture, and it is very difficult to write an essay about that without bringing up people from popular culture- even in the prompt it says it can be someone from any field. i know for a fact that current CMC students have written about ferris bueller, harry potter, bob marley, and yes dr. seuss (i found this out after i finished my essay)

besides, even if they hate dr. seuss essays i believe i approached it in a unique enough manner not to be clumped with all the other essays out there.

but also not to worry- if i don't get in it will be because of my grades, not my essays lol. if i wrote a normal essay i wouldn't have a prayer- i need to stand out and if writing a poem is a way to do that, than so be it.
