For those of you who are interested, here are this year’s numbers:

We were told there was a 40% increase in applications this year (across the department). There were approximately 580 MT applications (caveat: they told us this number may not be absolutely accurate). They will accept 40 people to yield 20 in MT. They said they do not cast along type, but are looking for a balance of “accomplishment and potential.” There are many more females than males applying. This year’s freshman MT class has 5 boys.

They also said they will accept 40 to yield 20 in straight acting.

I’m pretty sure there are more than 5 boys in this year’s freshman MT class. When we visited in October (D is MT freshman), we counted 11 male MTs on the bulletin board which had the photos of all the VPA first year students.

Maybe some have left or switched majors? I saw that board, too, and there were very few boys. But this is what the head of the MT department said this weekend, unless we misunderstood him.

I saw this months ago and kept meaning to correct it: I’m a student in this year’s MT class, and I can promise you that we definitely have more than 5 boys! We do indeed have 11, and no one has dropped or switched into the acting track.
