Just got an email from UNC, and I'm a semi-finalist for this scholarship. Is anyone else? What kind of writing did you submit? How many semi-finalists are there?

Also, I was deferred early action. Does this mean that my chances of getting in regular decision are higher?

Congratulations!!
Me too! I submitted a mixed genre portfolio because I can’t quite choose between playwriting, memoirs and short stories. I’ve no clue how many semifinalists there may be, but I’m glad they’re sending answers in a timely fashion. Good luck!!

I think that this may have some positive effect on your RD chances. Although they only select the TWS winner in April., I would imagine that the admissions staff would be somehow corresponding with the advisory board and they would be aware of your literary talent & creative merit.

Congrats to both of you on being semifinalists!! I am also a semifinalist so I emailed the Co-Director of the scholarship and asked your question. This year, there were “about 115 applicants” and “12 students advanced to semi-finalist status.” The reply went on to say “We will bring 3 to campus for interviews and you will be notified of our decision sometime in mid-March.”

Congratulations once again on making it this far and best of luck to all of the semifinalists!!!

No notification yet for me, either. Writing the words “mid-[month]” is always such a conveniently ambiguous term for colleges/programs, isn’t it? But it’s a hard decision, of course, so I guess I’m glad that they’re taking a while to deliberate. I expect, though, that they’ll get back to us by March 15th.

Got the message yesterday. They’re having me and 2 others interview on-campus on the 25th. Feels like Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. If you haven’t heard back yet, that’s probably not good news.

Congrats! That’s really exciting. I just got a letter saying that I didn’t make it past semi-finalist status, but I’m not too worried. I was honored to be a semi-finalist anyway. And besides, my letter makes it sound kind of like they’ve accepted me regular decision (maybe I’m reading into it too much) :P
