Those accepted or deferred into engineering, what were your stats?

I applied for the November 1st deadline, and I am VERY scared that I won't be accepted. I have good stats, but I've seen them defer some very qualified people. I just want to ask, for those who were accepted to the class of 2019 (possibly even before), what we're your stats? If you were deferred what we're your stats? Thanks

You should scan this: <a href=“Class of 2019 Admissions Results Thread (12/15 7PM Responses) - North Carolina State University - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/north-carolina-state-university/1719153-class-of-2019-admissions-results-thread-12-15-7pm-responses-p1.html</a>

There are a couple in there (first and second page)
I haven’t posted my stats in there yet. I’ll try to post from how the thread I linked wants it.

Status: Accepted
Residency: In State
Gender: female
Race: Asian
Major: mechanical engineering
ACT: 28 superscored or 30 (my 30 was disqualified for a mis-testing by ACT but NCSU says they received it so I’m not sure if they count it)
Essay: I talked about race and being a minority in a mostly white area. Do they use the other 4 for admissions? (I wrote those in a couple hours because my mom nagged me about applying to whatever scholarships they’re for.)
Rigor: No AP (my school offers none but I’ve taken 70+ credit dual enrollment classes. They only have honors)
Extracurriculars: no leadership. Art club for four years, a small amount of volunteering, quiditich for a year, job for a different year
Class rank: 1/Too small to matter (my class size on my transcript can be counted on 1 hand…)

Honestly I think a big part of my acceptance is that I’m a female. A couple guys, who applied to NCSU engineering, were deferred. I know one has better EC and transcript than me (he has one B while my transcript can spell CAB a few times… He also has done a lot of volunteering and holds a few positions I think? He had a personal statement and did the 4 small essays). I’m not sure about the other dude (pretty sure he did a personal statement fhough) but I’m sure most at my school would regard him as smarter. I did know a girl at my school who was lower than me who had applied for engineering. I think she was rejected? Maybe they liked my choppy race essay (I didn’t do it last minute like the other ones but I know my ideas could have flowed better) and used my 30? Or that I live in the middle of nowhere…

Good luck! Even if your standardized test scores are weak for NCSU, I’m sure school rigor and an essay can make up for it.

On an off note: NCSU needs a simpler way to put in transcripts. They have 3 versions of my high school transcript… I feel like manually putting in each class for high school and college is their own version of hazing applicants.

Wait… does being female help? I’m a female, and I didn’t really think/know that helped? @Athana‌ And thanks for posting your stats! I’ve seen a ton of females accepted recently, I hope to be one of them.

@wchristen89‌ I think in engineering it is. Isn’t the female population in the engineering low? It was almost 20% in 2010. For something like textiles, I don’t think it is since it’s mostly female.

I went to the engineering department website: <a href=“Admissions | College of Engineering”>Admissions | College of Engineering;

“Students who have taken advanced courses, particularly in math, chemistry and physics”
The highest math class I’ve taken is Precalc.
I’ve done chemistry with dual enrollment.
I took honours physics.

“weighted high school grade point average of 4.57, and an unweighted grade point average of 3.82.”
I fall under that and have a 3.7 and a 4.4
I guess that could be overlooked for the excess amount of classes I have taken.

“freshmen were in the top 10 percent”
Mine doesn’t matter since 2nd place wouldn’t be there. I’m sure you’ll be fine even if you’re in the top 15%

"50 percent of incoming freshmen had SAT scores in the 1220-1420 range (on the original two-part SAT, critical reading and math) or ACT scores in the upper 20s. "
The ACT range is 28-32.
My math is a 29 regardless of what they use.
Science was 29 in the disqualified test; 27 on the superscore
English was 30~ (I don’t remember exactly); 26 on superscore (I dropped the most here and I can’t figure out why)
Reading is a 31 on both

“We are also interested in students who have participated in engineering- or science-related extracurricular activities such as Science Olympiad and FIRST Robotics.” (FAQ)
Haha. The closest I have is volunteering at a hospital…
They might give me slack because the most science my area does, usually, is turn corn into alcohol illegally…

I’m sure you’ll do fine. I look like an artsy person on my application and the only strong thing I had going for me are my numerous classes.

Hopefully this reassures you. Enjoy your holidays!

My son was accepted - Mech Engr. I will give you his stats and I want to try to boil this down:
29 ACT / 31 Superscore
3.65 GPA unweighted / 5.3 weighted (20 Honors and AP classes - no scores > 2)
EC’s - None (Hardly - we made what he had appear strong but it wasnt much)
White / male
Out of state

Honestly, he has everything against him except the scores and out of state. This decision has to be on scores and that we would pay OOS tuition.

All that said I want to comment on some opinions. People will say why they “think” got then in or not. There is no way to know this and it is only an opinion. It is my opinion though that a school like NC State is most likely making cuts based almost solely on sortable facts like scores particularly at first as they remove the lower numbers (DENIED) and approve the higher cuts (ACCEPT) while putting a hold on the middle (DEFERRED). On the other hand schools like Cal Tech, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Davidson, etc are making those cuts but then reading every app.

If you are deferred then I would guess that for some reason you did not make this first cut but in no way are out. They very much want to maximize some stats like GPA, ACT, SAT, income (out of state) and diversity stats while filling each major up. Honestly though - I dont know which ones they pursue but as painful as the wait is you just need to wait while keeping options open.

Good luck, keep your chin up and your options open.

@Jman1234‌ Thank you! My scores are good IMO (1430 CR+M, with an 800 in math), and so is my GPA/class rank. I guess I’m worried because the lowest grades I’ve received in high school are in physics and math classes. But if I get deferred, Im almost certain I’ll get in my second choice! Thanks for your insight.

Accepted into Environmental Engineering :)

Out of state.
Gender: female
ACT: 32 (my first score) Math: 32, Science: 30, Reading: 34, Writing: 33.
SAT: 2030, 1400 M+CR (only score)
GPA: 4.431 as end of junior year. Idk how NCSU averaged the freshmen weighted GPA to be 4.5 considering different high schools calculate GPA’s differently, so Idk what my GPA is according to NCSU.
AP classes: calc AB (5), chemistry (4), language & comp (4), bio (4), APUSH (4). Currently in Calc BC, Physics 2, Literature & Comp, Macroeconomics, Government.
EC: I don’t feel like listing my EC’s sorry, but an important one was JETS.
Rank: 5/270

Personal statement: It was my Common App essay about how my identity wouldn’t be complete without a central background story. It was about moving to the US and how learning English was hard… assimilating was difficult…how my past is still integral to my identity. My essay was pretty on point, if I do say so myself.

I don’t like to think that they might have “set a lower bar” for females because I’d like to think of myself as smarter than most guys. I’m sure you got in though! No frets!

oh yes I forgot to mention I’m in Dual Enrollment for Engineering Models. To add onto the weighted GPA thing again…to get a 4.57 GPA at my school you’d need to literally have taken 8 AP classes and all the honor classes offered by the end of junior year, but an A- is a 3.7 at my school.vv

Gender: Male
Major: Nuclear Engineering
Residency: In-State

GPA (weighted): 4.25, (unweighted): 3.3
Rank: 31/308
SAT (Cr + M): 1380, (Wr): 680
ACT: 32, (Read): 36, (Math): 35, (Science): 27, (English comb): 26

Course Rigor: 8 APs (combined Junior and Senior year), 10+ Honors. School offers 10 APs and rest are available online
ECs: FBLA 10-12th few awards, Science Olympiad 12th… that’s all
