Post!!!:P Im thinking about Gregory Drive...a teacher of mine recommended it to me, saying its def the hotspot 4 froshies! Hehehe..hes an alumni and is really boosting for me to go!:P
I initially wanted Bromley..but hes all like dont go for it..it costs more and its not worth it!

I applied to Bromley last wk.

yEAH? I still havent recived my admission package yet!! so im waiting for that b4 i apply 2 Gregory

Make sure you have more than just one imput on housing. I had so many people I talked to before I settled with ISR.

hmm...if you have a Livejournal there's a 'uiuc' community where you can talk to ppl about housing. (there's been quite a few posts on housing recently. i asked about all these residence halls and received like 15 responses in an hour.)kinda like the uiuc subforum here. but yea...LJ's down right now. :( at least they're posting their progress online

I live in an apt... I'm a junior though. Any girls wanna join?

Yeah..i just joined that community actually..i should post about dorms and see what info i can get..its really frustrating how LJ is down now..:(

Yeah I go through the dorms one by one (all the ones I know about)

ISR - AC (super cold in summer), nerds and engineers (unless you get a good floor), nice if you want to concentrate on grades, if you're a gamer a plus (I am not which is why I didn't really fit in at Hendrick), crap rooms, not as co-ed as it would have you believe the girls and guys live in different towers, close to campus

Hendrick - I was forced by my dad to live here, AC, nerds and engineers, really anti-social but few cool people, really really nice rooms on West Side, own bathroom and shower, close to Campus

PAR - crap crap crap (but I love it there) but social, most minorities get put here (I know almost all my minority friends got shoved here), worst dorm rooms on campus, nice programs like global communities, most of my friends live there, NO AC!!!, super far from campus

FAR - similar to PAR but has AC, many asians, aka Beehive (black and yellow [racially offensive but true not that it's a bad thing]), some academic areas like Women in Science and Eng. rooms, super far from campus

6-Pack - SOCIAL, right next to Frat Park, really LOUD at all times (ok if you can block it out, I can't, plus there is always the library)

Bromley - really really nice rooms, rich kids, near to frat park, I'm living there next year and don't really know if I'm looking forward to it, most social of private dorms which isn't saying much.

Newmann? (spelling?) - Catholic, right next to quad, haven't been in the rooms but I bet they're okay.

Busey and LAR are all girl dorms don't know too much about them

Lungren - all guys dorm, right by 6-pack, but quieter from what I've heard (suprisingly)

Allen - theatre people, bandos, artistes, and potsmokers, supposedly gay dorm (from who I have met I guess I would have to agree partially), liberal dorm, really strange sometimes but I'm not a bando so I wouldn't understand probably

BravoEcho & others,

Any input on Armory Suite re: room, food, location, distance, etc.?

Thanx!

Oh shoot I forgot about that and Illini Tower. I don't know about the Armory b/c I only know one person there and I forgot what she said about it. I'll ask her. I think it is a decent distance. Not ridiculous but not super close.

IT: Nice apartment rooms, shared bathroom, kitchen, that kinda stuff. Ummm the joke is that all the Jews live there. It is pretty true or at least rich people. Not as social as one would think. About same distance as Armory.

Another thing about the six-pack is that a lot of athletes live there because it is right next to the gym.

There are also a few dorms right by the six-pack like Van Doren and Taft but aren't part of it. I don't really know what that means for the dorms.

You also forgot Taft/Van-Doren "The Bastard Child of the 6-pack". Pretty much the same deal as the six pack - very social and very loud.

I wish I could edit my posts. Anyway, I see now that you did mention them. Wooohooo post count +1.

IlliniJBravoEcho:

Man, those all sound crappy by your descriptions. Are there any decent co-ed dorms that are moderately social but not incredibly noisey or full of jocks?

Bromley, 6-pack if you can stand it (I couldn't many can), Van Doren & Taft, FAR (PAR really is a ****hole as far as rooms go but I wouldnt mind staying there) isn't too bad, Lungren is right by it but a little quieter. They all have their pros & cons sorry I made them sound bad. The only ones I wouldnt want to live in at all are Allen and ISR. But I'm not a theatre or band person so I wouldn't fit in at Allen. And ISR is just nerdy unless you luck out with a good floor. Sorry again about the discriptions I tried to give them the pros and cons. I'm staying at Bromley b/c it's near social places and has nice rooms and is pretty social but not overwhelmingly so. But it is expensive so if you don't want to pay. I would rather like where I'm living and I can't be around loudness at all b/c I'm very very easily distracted and it wouldn't work b/c I would just go out all the time with people who's major don't require that they study and do hw all week like mine.

Hey BravoEcho, you mind strolling by Armory Suites and taking a look see re what the place and people and location are like? Much appreciated.

Going into engineering ...

Thinking about ISR or 6-pack?

Thoughts?

Big concern is relative closeness to engineering campus =p

ISR is obviously closer to the engineering campus and the main campus, which are the two places where most of your classes will be held.

ISR is different from 6-pack though. Most of the residents at ISR are upper classmen. Plus, ISR isn't quite as socially engaging as 6-pack. The 6-pack is known as being the most social residence halls.

If you want convenience, then you should definitely choose ISR because of its closeness to the main campus and the engineering campus. Plus, you get air conditioning at ISR. If you want to be in a more social environment, then 6-pack would be a better bet. This isn't to say that ISR is horribly boring; there are plent of social people who like to party at ISR.

Another option you might want to think about is Hendrick House. It's private certified housing, so it's a little more expensive. Hendrick House is a about a block away from ISR going in the direction of the engineering campus. The large majority of students at Hendrick House are engineering students. The rooms are nicer and the food is a little better at Hendrick compared to the university residence halls. But the atmosphere at Hendrick is pretty dull since a lot of residents are either studying or playing video games.

better question:

what's 6-pack's official name? =p

I think the official name is the Champaign Residence Halls. The
6-pack is generally considered to be the residence halls that branch off of the Peabody and Gregory residence halls, but there are other residence halls nearby that are also a part of the 6-pack.

Here's a map do give you a visual idea. The orange buildings are what compose the six pack.
