Those deferred - what will you do?

for anyone who was deferred, what do you plan on doing to make your application stronger?

& i know the early action pool was much stronger this year, but is it even a hopeful sign to be deferred? if they can't admit someone in december, what is going to make them suddenly change their minds in the spring?

my act is 24. I will try to improve that. I think it would look pretty good if I could suddenly make it jump up to 33 or someting like that-.... well if, I'm not really good at the standartizised stuff. and I will try to do volunteer, internship stuff or get some award

wait u got deferred with a 24 act????????

I think I will just send a letter saying Yale is still my first choice and hope for a miracle...

yeah, me too. but miracles do happen. impossible as they may seem, you have to fight for every dream.

hmm well i plan on curing cancer and/or AIDS... but other than that... =P

seriously tho i forgot to mention a couple big things on my resume (or anywhere in the app for that matter) so i'm planning on sending a letter to my regional rep in early/mid feb with a letter indicating my continued interest, an updated resume, and probably a photography portfolio that I wasn't able to compile for SCEA

i got deffered and maybe the reason was my poor sat scores 550,780 and 620 with a ten in essay..so i have to work on them ...does anybody know how many defferals Yale give?

yea if u look at the statistics tab on the deferral page
Total Number of Applicants: 4888
Number Admitted: 885 (18.1%)
Number Deferred: 3159 (64.6%)
Number Denied: 798 (16.3%)

Would sending additional stuff (i.e. test scores, awards, etc.) actually help?

If they didn't want us the first time, would an extra statistic do anything to change their minds? Or would we just come off as desperate?

Frankly, I've pretty much given up on Yale.

I feel that being deferred is as good as a rejection, except that they continue to string you along.

I've been told by an admissions officer of a prestigious university that I know pretty well that extra statistics and efforts to learn more about the college via phone calls, asking for course catalogs, improving test scores, etc. do help in the end. It can't hurt to be more curious or send in better scores can it? So, why not do it then.

If we would consider calling, who would we call? I mean admissions offive or the number on our blue Yale letter or....?

FYI from a Yale 2010 Mom
My son was deferred when he applied early. He had was #1 in his class, 2300 SAT, 800s on his SATIIs, National Merit... the whole package. He even took an actually Yale class the summer prior. I think they deffered him because they knew that he wanted Yale badly enough that he would take their offer in the spring. Maybe they saved the binding early application offers to the ones they are afraid they'll lose. Go Bulldogs!!

Don't be so naive. My son, too, had 2310 sat, 800's sat 2's, leadership positions and so on. His rival at his school who was accepted had solid stats. He also had legacy and a rich Dad.

Sigh... legacies. I was quite puzzled that my interviewer, who's about 50, went to Yale because my parents had always fed me the impression that kids at that time (in my country) weren't that well off. Then I found out that my interviewer's parents went to Yale. He's also married to a Yalie, and their kid is a Yale 2010 with not-so-strong stats. 3-generation Yale.. how are we gonna compete with that?!

I have to admit that I am actually happy that I got deferred and not accepted. Why?

Simple: Getting accepted already would have been too easy. I would have felt bored in school because I would know that I am going to Yale anyway, so I would lose my motivation. I wouldn't have put as much effort in my work as I did before. And that would have been bad for all my other applications and for the mid-year report. But the deferral showed me one thing: There is a chance and they are interested in me. They didn't take me, yeah, but they didn't reject me either. So deferral from Yale probably means that I have pretty good chance of getting into some of the not so selective Ivys. And it also means that if I improve drastically I have a fair chance of getting in.

So here's what I did/will do:
I talked to all of my teachers where I didn't already have a 7 (I'm taking the IB) that I really need one on my next report card, and I asked for additional work I could do to achieve this. They gave me additional work. So I hope that my next report card will be even better than my last one. In fact, with three 7s in HighLevel subject one even qualifys for Advanced Standing at Yale. I'm aiming to get four 7s in HighLevel subjects on the next report card - so even if I don't get one of them for some reason, I still have three. If I'm good enough for advanced standing, how can they reject me?

In addition to that, I'm retaking the ACT and SAT IIs. If they see that you're still working and trying to improve these scores it will be good as well.

I'm also thinking about asking one of my teachers for an additional recommendation because I did some very nice additional ETs. What do you think about this? Is it useful? It would also show that I am still interested.

Additionally I want to write a letter to them and tell them that Yale is still my first choice and that I really want to go there. To those of you who also send one: where exactly do you send it, do you send a letter, an e-mail, or do you call? And to whom do you address in the letter? Jeffrey Brenzel personally? Or just "to whom it may concern"?

"If I'm good enough for advanced standing, how can they reject me?" They reject hundreds of people with similar numbers of APs and IBs every year.

Dr. Avrah,

send it to your regional admission rep. On Yale's website go to "contact us" then "Staff Directory"- or something to that effect, then to internationals- if you're one- or your state if you're from the US and they'll have your regional reps name there.

I was deferred too... I'm so disappointed. I'm gonna send in two new essays, because looking back my essays really weren't that great... unfortunately, Yale won't let me replace the essays I already sent in, just add on to my profile.

BTW, could anybody tell me why I was deferred? I wanna know what I did wrong.

I was deferred and I'm also thinking about sending in another essay. My application essays were decent, but lackluster. My new one is really unique, but when I wrote it I'd already submitted my Yale application.
Would sending an additional essay help, or would it actually hurt, my chances?
