at my s's school, captains are elected by the team so they qualify as "elected" positions. I guess if they were appointed, it would be less fair, but unfortunately, life isn't fair, especially in the game of high stakes college admissions. If you compete nationally in your sport, I would think that will stand out as much as any captain position, elected or not.

Don't mind if I just jump into the discussion?

How are my EC's? Most of them are journalism related, and I spend a lot of time volunteering (I know they aren't the same thing, but I'm really active with it)

jkid and others looking for responses to your own ECs:

You'll get more responses if you start your own thread because then your post will stand out.

Yes,

As we've said before, you'll get many more responses with an INDIVIDUAL THREAD!!!

i was appointed VP of SPanish CLub yesterday.....yay...leadership lol

Just curious, what if you played varsity soccer for only one year? Or two years?

Does playing for only one year look bad?

I'm applying to UNC as a oos minority and I had been in contact with the diversity office and was invited to UNC HS honors Day. Which in the letter that I should "strongly consider attening" if I was interested in UNC....will this look that favorable on my app.

warpedklown- I'm sure only playing soccer for a year or two is not going to kill your chances. It will however hurt you if you don't replace it with something that is really good. In ninth grade I ran track, and I was planning on running cross country the next year, but after swimming all summer (I had also been swimming year round for a few years), I realized that my chances at making it farther (district finals, regionals, etc.) were better in swimming so I stuck with that and didn't do cross country. And then when track season rolled around, I realized I was not the fastest in my grade anymore (like I had been last year) and then dropped that to focus on swimming year round. Since then I have won club state for my age group and made the all-county swim team.

Same thing with band. I was really good at it, I had just switched from trumpet to baritone in ninth grade and made first chair in my band, then in 10th grade I made 1st chair at all-county honors band and made 2nd chair at all-district band and got a superior for a solo. And I was section leader for my 10th and 11th grade years. But band just got to be too much to add onto being in FCA, NHS, SGA, and year-round swimming. So I quit after the end of my junior year, but I really don't think quitting something with one year left will hurt me because I really replaced it with strong EC's (NHS Pres., FCA Captain, Swim Team Captain, SGA Rep).

Of course you don't have to be the president/captain of three different things (which I'm not even sure if that's against the rules at our school lol) but you need to show that soccer was not your passion and something else was, and it soccer was taking away from it. Track was taking away from swimming and the band definitely was. The other clubs weren't as much so I kept those, and they keep me well-balanced. If you really have something else that is being eaten away at by soccer, whether it be a death schedule full of AP's, a job, or being in something else, go ahead and quit soccer. Just make sure you stay with what you want, and get some leadership in it and just do well in it. Band, though I was good at it (just as you're probably good at soccer since you were on varsity) was just not my thing. I just didn't sit at home and play video games when I quit. I'm probably busier this year than ever.

Thing is, it IS my passion though. LoL.

I just wish I was better at it, like I wanted to get all-county honors in soccer or something at least too. Whatever.

Is Key Club and CSF good EC's?

CSF is lame.

Key club is good.

"CSF is lame.

Key club is good."

Biased?

There's really no point in being CSF. Anyone with a decent GPA can get it with the stupid sticker on your diploma. It doesn't change a thing. Clubs like The Key Club and NHS actually mean something.

If I am captain of a really good team that basically wins states all year after year, but I am not within the top ten that contributes to gaining the state title, would it be honest or worthwhile to write: captain, state champions. Or would that be irrelevant?

No, that wouldn't be irrelevant. It all of course, matters what state you're from, and how fierce the competition is there. If you are indeed captain, and you are indeed state champs, WRITE IT DOWN, it's not up to you to tell colleges why you're WORSE than the next applicant. You haven't lied on your app - you worked hard to gain your captain position, your team has done well in state, case closed.

Just curious, what if you played varsity soccer for only one year? Or two years?

Does playing for only one year look bad?

I would say that first, it obviously depends on your school. If it is a competitive, large public high school, chances are that your skills are alot better than a 800 student school's players. One year varsity sometimes means senior benchwarmer....but not always. Two years looks better.

My friend only played for one year and I was asking about this for him...he was talking about how he regretted playing JV his junior year and blahblahblah. Essentially...after I showed him this link...he regretted sticking with it.

Oh and yeah the school we go to is a large school with about 2500 people.

can someone tell me how this is?? (Im a soph)

EC: Student Council
As my first year on it, I was put on the Chaperone's committee for homecoming. The chair of the committee said he was doing what he could to get a list of people we needed to call. I made one call, got the list, and spent seven hours that night typing the list and dividing it so that each person could call their person. I made a whole list and twelve separate lists, one per person. While that's not too much, I am now chair of the committee. I have held three meetings in two weeks and give up my lunch hour daily and thirty minutes after school daily to work on this. I am also in five honors classes (Math/Eng/His/Sci/College-Test Prep) and handling that homework on top of other ECs. I give up my evenings to make calls and get people. I am also one of the people that decides what is at the dance and setting up the game. Is this a good or bad EC in the eyes of good schools?

Is starting a club a really good thing? I am interested in starting three clubs at my high school. (Model UN, Interact, and an International Relations Club) Is that a little too many?

You know, I was really interested in learning how to play the clarinet and the flute by the end of my senior year (I made that plan Freshman year). I am now a senior, and I can barely play a scale on the flute.

Think seriously Jonathan1, will you really be able to START, MANAGE, and significantly CONSTRIBUTE, to those THREE groups? From my use of caps, I don't think you will. Model UN requires a hardcore commitment, and I know that if you wanted to actually contribute something in Internat'l relationtions club, you'd also have to do a lot of work.

Ultimately, I think you could manage two, but I think its nearly impossible to contribute a lot when you are part of 3 groups. Quality over quantity my friend.
