Those familiar w/Philly

We are heading to Temple this weekend & are staying @ the Holiday Inn Express on Walnut, the audition will be on 13th street at the Tomlinson Theater. We are already paying to park our car thru the hotel, I had hoped to leave it & walk to the audition, but it looks too far. Is there any public transit that could take us? I have tried to figure this out thru some maps & decided to ask some experts!

Thanks so much!

Take the subway-there’s a stop right on campus.

Thanks! Will there be a close subway stop to get on near our hotel?

Have not taken the subway in Philly so can’t help you there but parking in Philly is very erratic. One street will have certain rules and the next block completely different and they ticket a lot if you do it wrong. The meter enforcement have little computers that tell them when your parking meter has run out and they scoot right over and ticket you. I got a ticket once for being 8 minutes over. Ticket was there and no meter maid in sight: they must have been there the minute I went over my two hours! I would leave the car parked and get around other ways.

Thanks everyone, I think I found a subway map that helps me, looks like we need the Broad street line & there is a stop near our hotel & then the one @ temple. I’m sure the hotel can help us too!

Any suggestions of places to eat Friday nite?

I definitely wouldn’t walk it. Subway would be good although I’m not familiar with that line. Parking stinks as dramamom0804 says–but if you park at the hotel, you can also drive to Temple. It’s pretty easy to do this and Temple will have parking (unlike Center City where you’re staying). It just depends on what you find most convenient. Walnut and 13th has a ton of great restaurants well within walking distance. It really depends on what you like to eat. Chinatown is a few blocks away, as is the wonderful Reading Terminal (great vibes!). Or you can go more upscale. What sorts of restaurants are you interested in?

Well my crew are not into Chinese or Mexican, they do like steak, but obviously not the most expensive place! I really want a Philly Cheesesteak!

And if we drive to temple we will have to pay for parking again according to the email, so I am hoping the subway will work.

Keep the car parked the whole time you are there. Take the Broad Street Line northbound from the Walnut Locust stop to the Susquehanna Dauphin stop. For cities like philly, nyc etc, hopstop dot com is your friend.

Absolutely get a cheesesteak from Pat’s or Geno’s or both on alternating days. The are located across the street from one another at 9th & Passyunk. Just know what you want before you step up to the window and have your money ready. Neither is the soup nazi, but they’re close. And the best cheesesteaks in the world.

For more sit-down dining, as said upthread, you are in the heart of Philly, with tons of choices within a few block radius.GL

Definitely take public transportation or a cab for convenience. You might even check to see if the hotel has a shuttle that won’t be doing an airport run at the time and perhaps would take you to Temple?. There are plenty of restaurants, pubs like Moriarty’s, Irish Pub, etc near the hotel, Reading Terminal with many vendors- great for breakfast and many others. If you save on meals at the pubs and market, the cab might be worth it. Keep in mind, we might be due for some snow yet again this weekend, so be prepared to pad your times. Break a Leg!

Geno’s with Wiz (the bomb!) - Be prepared and know how to order, because the service is fast and the line keeps moving. For example, on a cheese steak with onions specify which kind of cheese you’d like (Provolone, American or Cheese Whiz). By the time you have given your order, your money will be taken and your sandwich will be out the window nice and hot! At the next window you can pick up your soda, fries and coffee. Geno’s is open 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a week.
Break a Leg and have fun in Philly!

Cheese Whiz on a steak sandwich is blasphemy!

I believe that the Temple U stop of the Broad street line is closer to Tomlinson. It let’s you off right at the fabulous new high rise dorm.

Walnut/Sansom has a bunch of amazing restaurants. Definitely try to make a stop to Chinatown!

If we’re gonna have a Geno’s & Pat’s discussion here, I have to put in that I dislike the places. Now that’s blasphemy. Here goes: I really don’t understand the charms of paying $10 for a cheesesteak and not being able to eat inside. In this weather especially. You’d have to eat it huddled in the cold outside, or in the car – but if you’re not driving, then where would you eat it? In the cab? By the time you bring it back to the hotel, it will be cold. Personally, I’d just go to Reading Terminal and buy stuff there. Fighting words, I know. Btw, cheese whiz is supposed to be authentic, but I dislike that too–provolone for me all the way!

^^ Agree, connections. Besides, everyone knows that the best cheesesteaks are found in south Jersey!

I don’t know why anyone claims that cheez whiz is authentic. I grew up eating cheesesteaks and never once saw that awful whiz served on one. Provolone, it is.

Definitely get off the subway at Cecil B. Moore and walk through the campus instead of getting off at Susquehanna. Walks are similar distance from theater at 13th and Norris, but much nicer to be on-campus!

Good luck to your daughter today. My son will be working at the auditions this morning.
