Are you going to live at home or at the UCLA dorms/apts? Are you close enough to Westwood to commute or do you live on the other side of town and are planning to dorm? I live pretty far from UCLA in Koreatown (right in the middle of LA) and if I went to UCLA I would rather live in the dorms than spend up to an hour everyday trying to get to campus...but if I drove I would save a sheet load of money. What do you guys think?

get on the red line?

The Red Line doesnt get anywhere near UCLA…

You mean the 720/920?

I’m in the same boat (except I’m in Echo Park) and I’m still trying to see which is going to be better. I told myself I’d like to give up my car when I transfer but it’s a fairly long bus ride. I’m leaning toward dorms at the moment though.

ya man, i friggin hate long commutes. it already takes ~45 mins to get to UCLA by car, I shudder to think how long it would take by bus.

I live in West Hollywood and work in Beverly Hills so I’m gonna drive. I better get a parking pass!!

Hopefully I get into Berkeley so I can just ride a bike or take the bus.

The commute from Glendale is going to suck. Traffic sucks BALLS.

I live in freaking Rancho Cucamonga! Until I find roommates, I have no choice but to commute. If I could find another girl to move in with somewhere off campus, Im doomed to commute.

Ouch, that’s a helluva drive from Cucamonga. If I choose to stay at my mom’s, I’d have to drive from Glendora and that’s definitely not going to happen.

wow you guys have pretty gnarly commutes. at least you’ll be saving money…

@americanrebel – what? you mean bike or bus it from your dorm in berkeley right?

Dorm… spend that extra money… it’ll be worth it. Once in lifetime experience

Yeah, a car is out of the question if I go there.

I’m gonna be commuting from Santa Clarita, and holding down a full time job in Sylmar, I’m gonna go insane!

I wish I could dorm/live off-campus. It’s just so pricey, and I’ll be pulling out loans as it is. If maybe I can find a few good deals and find friends to room with, I’ll live off-campus. But I’ll probably end up commuting. Because the experience is really something; I’ve got a bunch of friends living on-campus at UCLA and it’s simply awesome.

But experience aside, I just don’t want to deal with the traffic. I used to volunteer at the Fowler Museum on-campus and it once took me 2.5/3 hours to get there…from GLENDALE. It’s a 30-minute ride with no traffic.

i wouldn’t go there on the bus. from my house it was ~two hours NOT including time waiting for the busses. I’m also not including the time walking from westwood/wilshire to campus (it’d be a huge pain if you’re northcampus imo) that’s not something i’d be up for doing every day (but i know people that do) I just took out some loans and got an off campus apartment. (while i’m sure i could have gotten a parking pass from my house, i wasn’t able to since i didn’t have a license at the time)

I’ve heard nothing but people complaining about the dorms. Apartments are hit and miss. They’re awesome if you have cool roommates, and they suck hard if you have crappy ones. However, the dorms are no exception from this. You’ll also be able to do a ton of stuff that the dorms don’t permit, you’ll have a much larger living area (the dorms are TINY) and you’ll have more control over what you eat (won’t have to deal with that dorm food)

If you do move out, there are pros and cons to living in westwood:

pros: close to school, if you ever want to go to any events in westwood, you can without having to worry about catching a bus late, more incentive to go to class, easier to hang out with classmates, etc.

cons: westwood is expeeeeeensive. the total rent in my apmt is 1B1B is 1350 which is split among me and 3 other people. However, my other apartment in west L.A. was 1700 and was 2b2b and was like 4x the size the one i have in westwood is.

all in all its up to how motivated you are. I know someone who does this daily, but she also transferred with a 4.0, while working. Think about whether its something you can see yourself doing everyday. And if you’re not taking summer, try doing this maybe for a week and see how bad it is.

There is no way I’m commuting if I decide to go to LA. LA traffic is definatly not pretty and if I have classes in the morning, say like 8am, ill have to be prepared to be on the road by at least 6am. Luckily I get financial aid so I don’t have to worry about spending that much money on dorming. If I was forced to commute, I probably wouldn’t go to ucla.

I’m already dreading the commute. I’ll be driving everyday from North Hollywood, so I better get accepted for a parking permit.

i live in the valley so w/o traffic its like 15-20 minutes with traffic…thats just another story haha. but my plan is to get an off campus apartment thats associated with ucla.

I will be commuting from Ontario.
