...how did you actually get it there? :P

...how did you actually get it there? :P

Driving's not an option for me...

I would bring it to a local UPS store. They will box it up for you and ship it to your school.

well how else do you plan on getting your other stuff to your campus? depending on how you’re going to get your other stuff to campus, you might want to include your desktop as part of it.

Well I’m going by plane, so a lot of the other stuff can just go as luggage. I don’t want to put electronics, such as desktops, with that…

well one way or the other its gonna get over to your campus by plane whether you take it with you as luggage or you ship it out via USPS/UPS/Fedex/etc. it’s just a matter of what the cheaper option is. i mean plane is the only alternative really if driving isn’t an option. unless of course you purchase a new desktop when you get to school (but that will also be going by plane).

Approximately how much would it cost to ship a computer across the country with like UPS/Fedex?

Are you handy with computers?

If so, you could just take it apart and put some of the pieces in your luggage, and maybe ship the empty case. I’m not familiar with UPS, but it might be based on weight.

If you have to travel back and forth to school by plane, don’t you think a cheap laptop might be a good investment?

Estimates the cost depending on size, weight and distance.

If you’re going to have to ship the desktop repeatedly I think the odds would probably call for eventual breakage in shipping. In your case I agree with the idea of purchasing an inexpensive laptop because that seems most logistically feasible.

I’m currently looking at the having a desktop/netbook setup.

I’m planning a buliding a desktop, but I’m trying to figure out if I can get it there easily. What do you mean by “repeated” shipping though? I won’t need to take it home for breaks, -maybe- summer break, but I have relatives in the area where I can store it most of the time if needed…

If you’re near a greyhound bus station, it’s really cheap to ship with them. But you have to pick it up from the station yourself.

Save the box you get your case in, repack it, then double box it. Ship it once and forget about moving it again.

Are you going to be a Freshman this year? If so then just hold off and when you buy it (or the components if you’re building) have it shipped to your dorm.

Forgive me for going off-topic:

Chuy, how’s VT? I’m contemplating applying there, but it’s location really bothers me. It’s in the boonies. How much is there to do in Blacksburg?

Will, you can ask in the Virginia Tech forum (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/virginia-tech/) and I and several other people will be able to give you our perspectives on it, and answer any specific questions. To avoid taking the thread off topic I’ll just reply if you post in there.

Ok, thanks. I posted in the forum.
