Those Waitlisted are waiting for you to make your Decision

As we talked last night about the options for my son and his friends, we were reminded of the fact that lots of students now wait eagerly to hear if they will come off a waitlist. We know there are still some schools to notify even their first round of accepted. We know there are still some schools to send full financial aid packages, which complicates the process ( but aren't we all thankful for that aid?) Out of all the experiences for each of our three children, this year was the most involved for FA and the longest in duration. All of this must weigh in on the decision to attend. However, many students now know where they will want to attend. Just as we told our son last night, the sooner any students can make their decision of a final school, the sooner additional options open for others and we'll see even more happier posts right here! Just a gentle reminder!

I would add tha with so many having 4 or more acceptances this year there are likely some schools that you already know you will not attend. You don’t need to wait until you have made a final choice before releasing your place at those schools.

The same goes for those on wait lists. Once you eliminate a school from consideration, please let that school know so they don’t waste time offering you a place and waiting for your “no thank you,” before being able to offer the place to the next person on the list.

While you certainly have the right to wait until May 1 to notify all schools of your decision, you can feel good knowing that by realeasing your place early, perhaps a fellow CCer will avoid wasting $$ paying a deposit that they will lose at another school.

Excellent point, tracyvp! The process of eliminating certain schools from your options might be gradual, so each decision to eliminate one acceptance can be a new option for another student. And, certainly, it makes the process that much simpler for the schools as well!

My D is in the pool at CCU, I noticed you said May 1. Does that mean everyone that got a letter has until May 1 to decide? So that means, we will have to wait to hear until then too?

If your D is still in the pool, she may be accepted before May 1. But if she ends up being wait listed, then yes, May 1st is the National Candidate Reply date. All accepted students have until that date to let schools know that they will attend. After that the schools can assess whether they still have space and offer those spaces to those on the wait list. However, if accepted students decline an offer BEFORE May 1st the school can possibly go to the wait list sooner. (I say possibly, because some schools will have accounted for this by accepting more than they need and may not go to the wait list at all.)

That’s why we are encouraging those who have several offers and who already know that will be declining one or more offers to let those schools know right away.

If your D ends up being wait listed and has another school to which she has been accepted (or more than one) she should choose one and send in her deposit by May 1. If she is subsequently offered a place at CCU and decides to accept the offer, she will likely lose her deposit at the other school, but there’s no help for that.

Besides freeing up a spot, it may free up some financial aid for someone else, also. Altho my son was not waitlisted at his current school, he did get a nice talent scholarship kind of late in the game that “sweetened the pot”, and I suspect that someone else released their spot (and their scholarship) back into circulation. That may help someone else make a final decision, and so on, and so on…

Hang in there, waitlisters…I know it is a long ride! Good luck to everyone!

A girl on facebook posted that she officially declined her spot in the MT program at Otterbein today, so there may be someone on the wait list notified. :)

…hoping for the same to happen at CCU! Drats …the waiting…the waiting…

Remember, though, that the waitlists are not usually just a big pool of candidates. Many schools will line people up by type…so, say a petite blonde soprano (ingenue) declines acceptance - the school will take the next petite blonde soprano on the waitlist. If you’re a big-boned brunette belter, that opening will not help you at all.

Remember also that many schools accept more students than seats in a program based on anticipated yield and never actually go to their wait list. It behooves students to be invested in the process of making a decision from among acceptances on the table rather than delaying in the hope that something may arise from wait list status. If it does, that’s an opportunity to rethink options but in the meantime it’s important to use April effectively to engage in the due diligence needed to make an informed and committed decision from existing acceptances.

I agree with Michael. Students with acceptances in hand should be directing their focus to those schools in order to make a decision. Counting on getting in off a waitlist isn’t wise as the chances of that happening are slim.

Not only are the chances slim but they could come very late - even into early August. Love the school to which you have been accepted. If something else comes along worry about it then.

I was left with the impression that coastal carolina’s list of those still being considered is small and that they don’t do large acceptances at 1st … Based on that we were still hopeful… Now after reading the last few posts…maybe we should just move on with the yes schools

It may happen but you should move on like it won’t.

Coastal does accept small numbers at a time, because we aim for a smaller class. It’s just too early to tell with the people who are in the yes pile whether they will attend or not to make any more offers. We don’t want to yield too large of a class.
