Those who are going out of state for school--

wow! do you mind if I ask where you were flying from?

boston...they do boston - nyc - philly tickets for 39 bucks...they shuttle every hour. I just drove down there about a week ago and the 5.5 hour car ride cost me about 100 dollars in gas.

It was cheaper for me to drive to Illinois than to fly - between rental car at the airport, fees, taxes, etc. I drove. I also just left late in the afternoon and drove through the night, so no hotel.

To the OP: here's what you do. Let your parents drive you out the first time and don't fight it too much. Pack up the minivan, do the drive, let them drive back, and then, come March, propose putting your stuff in storage for the summer and fly back. If you fight too much this summer, they'll do the drive again in the spring. If you have a place where you can keep your things and a ride to the airport, they'll probably prefer that method.

Well, my one-way plane ticket from Minneapolis to Boston was $118 dollars. There is no WAY driving would have been cheaper. Gas alone wouldn't be cheaper. Plus the 22 hour drive, hotel stay, food. Most likely a car rental, if not, the wear and tear on the car. I bought all my toiletries online from CVS.com, they have free shipping. I'm only shipping one one box of stuff.

I'm going to be flying because I don't think my mom will want to drive across the country (CA to NJ). I'll just pack some of my things in her suitcase and buy other stuff there.

I may be wrong...or rules may have changed...but dont you have to be 25 to rent a car?? If so, I dont see how you guys can fly Major Hub to Major Hub and rent a car unless your parents are with you.

It depends on the car rental place, but I assume most people will have their parents with them.

you only have to be 18 in michigan and california...but I think most kids would have their parents with them.
