How was it?
I am going this upcoming monday and tuesday (June 29/30)

the first orientation session is tomorrow

Oh cool me too! My friend went to the first one (25th/26th) and said it’s fun. However he said the meetings in the theatre are boring.

For those who have gone: How was the registration? any tips for those who are going on a later date?

I am also curious about how helpful the staff was at helping you pick the right classes.

Staff is helpful.

Though it isn’t hard to realize wut classes you will take.

Classes fill up FAST.expect to take classes you never even had in mind. You will be making alot of “alternate classes” in case your first choices are filled up already. Even if you have 50 alternate classes, if your the last to pick your second and third classes, you may not even get any of those!

If your in Letters and Science, you are going to leave SB with a 12 unit schedule (usually 3 4unit classes)
If your an engineer, i think its 15 (4 4 unit classes, or 3 with one being a 8 unit)

wait, we can’t get more than 12 units? i wanted to take 15 :(

how can we pick our classes faster?

^ Your group usually consists of 15-16 people.

You get assigned numbers randomly 1-16.

To get your schedule done faster and have the best chance of getting ALL your favorite classes in my opinion is to get the number 16.

People with the number 1 chooses their first choice first, but they choose their 2nd and 3rd last, which basically by that time your directors will probably struggle to find ANY classes open, so they assign whatever class that’s left whether you like it or not, mostly the classes that everybody dreads or is uninterested in. You are told to have several alternate classes in case ur favorite classes are filled. Even if you had 50 alternatives, they will probably be all full.

The order goes 1-16 for first choice, then 16-1 for 2nd and third choice, so if your the number 16, you simultaneously choose your 1,2,3 classes and you will be the first one done in your group.

Are you in letters and science? I think the max units for fall semester is 13.5 (not sure), but no matter what, every1 will leave orientation with EXACTLY 12 units for letters and science majors. Afterwards, you can go home and have a 70 hour period where you can mess around with your schedule, maybe taking some classes that only are 1 or 0.5 units, though it is highly unrecommended because the director looks over your schedule and makes sure there are no conflicts on your schedule.

ok, i think i got you

yeah, i am going to be in L&S and i am really hoping to take chemistry and math 34a in the fall. is there any way we could just start adding our classes on gold? are we able to add classes on gold during/after our orientation?

^ nope, registration opens at 2:15 and that is when you will be in a room with your advisor and all of your group members. If you have an iphone or an internet enabled phone, you MIGHT register faster though it is totally unfair to other people and your advisor will most likely confiscate all phones or mention it in order to prevent it.

yeah, totally right to the max

Picking classes was VERY confusing. Everyone in my group was so lost. The advisor did little to help us. Classes filled up so fast that I was about to take feminine studies. Nothing wrong with that, but I don’t have interest in that. Like they said, hope you get #16 as that is by far the best way to go about. They do confiscate phones so good luck cheating if that’s what you plan to do.
Overall, orientation was a good experience but picking classes was stressful. It didn’t seem that way just for me, but also for everyone else in the group. Everyone is pressured to pick fast so that everyone else can get a chance to choose before EVERYTHING is taken.

^ ya man,

i got #1!!!

I was so ****ed because i was in a room with only 2 people left struggling to find ANY open classes.

Overall orientation was fun and totally worthwhile, but the whole scheduling of classes sort of left a sour taste in the mouth right before you leave SB.

is there any way to find out what classes they offer before we get there?? so we can at LEAST have an idea???

http://www.registrar.ucsb.edu/downloads/F09-SOC.pdf (Fall 2009 schedule of classes.)

As for thinking you can only take 12 or 13.5 units in fall, that’s not true unless they’ve changed it. You have a few “pass times” – times where you’re able to add classes. In each PASS TIME you’re able to add 13.5 units. This means when your second pass hits, you’ll be able to add more units. (Unless, of course, they changed the system for incoming freshmen…)

My fall freshman quarter was a 17 unit quarter.

Mike

^ yea sorry, only the 1st pass u can add 13.5

21 is the max but really dont overwork yourself.

Wow. That link that was posted with the information on classes is very… overwhelming.

WCF:

Heres how to look at it.

Page 33 is the start of the listing of available classes in the Fall 2009 quarter.

Lets look at the first course.

It is on the subject of Anthropology, with the acronym ANTH. This acronym is the word you will find on the GOLD website under “Find Courses” to represent Anthropology. Under Course, there is a number 2. The only significant thing you need to know if that numbers 1-99 are lower division courses while anything 100+ are upper. You do not need to worry about upperdivision right now, choose classes that are numbered 1-99.

The official title is Intro Cult Anthro, so you would call the class Anthropology 2 - Intro Cult Anthro, or simply Antropology 2 or ANTH2. Under unit, it says 4. 4 is typical for all classes. If you are in the college of letters and science, you will be leaving UCSB with a schedule of 12 units, usually a schedule with 3 “4-unit” classes.

Under Grade, you see the word Opt. This means it is optional, whether you choose Let (Letter grading, such as A, B, C, D, F) or P/NP (Pass or No Pass) I highly recommend choosing Let Grading for all classes, though there are some exceptions, which i forgot but ur advisor will tell you. Next, you can see the Lecture is on the days MWF [Monday, Weds, Friday] from 1:00pm to 1:50pm in CampBHall, which is our largest hall i believe. Next to it, you see it says GE: NWC, D. NWC and D are symbols for the several GEs you have to take. This means that this class satisfies part of the NWC and D categories for GE. Its always good to take classes that satisfies ALOT of GEs. Next it says a LAB/DIS is required. Most likely, you will have a discussion to accompany your lecture. Under the first line, there are several options for discussions, just choose one that fits your schedule. And remember, R = Thursday.

You shouldn’t worry though, your advisor should educate you well enough to teach you how to pick classes.

For those that already went to orientation, I’m just curious to see what classes you guys got.

At least you guys have the new version of GOLD If you think the new system is confusing, try using the old system to pick classes (it’s still up on the UCSB website I believe).
