What time to do things end on the first night? I need to know how late things go for parents. Did most of the students stay in the dorm or with parents?

I think they wound up with the mandatory activities around 8 or 9 on the first night. I think it’s mandatory that the kids stay in the dorms.

they throw a party for the kids at the Broward basement…hehe.

I stayed up till like 4 having a good time.

UF told me it would finish by 7:00, but I didn’t believe it…

On the first day, you’re given the kids group designations. You’re also given meal tickets, etc. You’ll have assigned times: check-in to Broward, activities fair, dinner. Based on which group your kid is in, you’ll rotate through these things. We missed the activities fair as our d had a meeting with a professor on campus … because of that, she didn’t get her F-book, which is available to them during that time. After they all finish rotating through those three activities, everyone heads back to Reitz for skits. My d and her two roommates came to Preview together, as did their parents. Scenario 1: one parent was exhausted after the day and didn’t walk to Broward (which, in the heat is a walk). She ate in the union and waited for her d to arrive back for skits. Scenario 2: H and I walked to Broward and ate dinner w/ d and one of her roommates. I was exhausted and drenched after that, so H got car and we left and went back out hotel … about 7-7:30, I think. Friend who stayed for skits didn’t get back to hotel 'til 9pm or so. Girls stayed on campus, as was mandatory. Didn’t go for the party in Broward … formed a small group and hung outside talking/ or hanging out in their dorm room. That first day was a loooong day. The second day … much more laid back. In fact, we spent a lot of time sitting and waiting in the food court because you picked and chose which things you went to, and a lot of it we’d done before having another kid already in college and knowing, for instance, that we weren’t signing up with Wachovia, so we didn’t need to get in that line. It was a good day to grab a table, come and go (3 family units coming and going in our group), and talk about different things they were hearing/reading/ etc. Also, we took care of a computer that day, one family did the wachovia gator card hook-up, etc. Hope that helps.

The first day was a lot of info for the parents…lots of presentations…then we met up with our kids for dinner and dorm check in…Then back to Reitz…Parents were “done” at 8:30…

Next day…not as formal…then kids went to advising/registration after lunch which took longer than I thought it would…She got back at 3 so we had an hour to do the Gator 1 card, meal plan, etc, etc…

Zebes, that helps a lot. Thanks.

It sounds like I don’t need to stay for the skits, if I don’t want to and may get done about 7:00 or 7:30. Thanks so much!

my parents left at around six. the resource fair, check-in, and skits aren’t worth going to if you’re tired or ready to leave.

second day for parents is pretty empty.

How do lunches go for the two days? I’m wondering if one or both are open so I can go meet a friend for lunch.

The first day you have lunch with your small group, so there is no way out of that. The second day you can do whatever as long as you are back for the next scheduled event.

Lunch is included in the price for the first day, but is an additional fee if you want to cover the 2nd day.

both meals are open on the second day but are pretty time restricted. i went in the line at subway at the beginning of lunch and didn’t get out until it was time to go.

We are going to Preview on Monday. Do we need to bring Linen’s for the dorm?

You do not need to bring linens because they are provided as well as a blanket and a pillow.

Linens were provided, but since most students are used to staying in hotels which provide soap/shampoo, a lot of the kids forgot to bring those things…

A tip: d had scheduled stuff in the morning, related to her registration, and we knew what time she’d be getting out for lunch. I grabbed a table and H got in Subway line right before students all let out. So, he was sitting down with our stuff and she had a nice leisurely lunch before she hit her next thing.
